If he can replicate his 2012 slash line and his 2014 defensive value (which was just about average), he'd be a great addition. I'm not really impressed by him, though. And 2012's 20/20 potential... Cue Steve Smith, stage left, windmilling...

Is that a split of how many times he'd be safe / thrown out at home with Steve at third? I like your optimism. Most coaches spend their lives helping runners to avoid tense situations; Reds coaches spend their lives getting them into tense situations...

Red Sox people strongly deny the report their coaches "all hate" Yoenis Cespedes, and at the very least, that word choice seems like quite the exaggeration. A Red Sox person told CBSSports.com it is "totally untrue" the coaches hate Cespedes, and Red Sox manager John Farrell called the report "completely unfounded" on MLB Network Radio. There have been suggestions the Red Sox may look to trade Cespedes, who's a free agent after next year. So it is fair to point out that Red Sox people obviously wouldn't want it out there that they hate Cespedes. But while Red Sox people may not love Cespedes' pedestrian on-base numbers, they say they need his power. Furthermore, while they don't rule out a trade of Cespedes, they don't suggest it is likely due to the team's overall need for power. There actually is no evidence anyone hates Cespedes, and in this case it seems more likely that there is simply frustration on the part of a coach or two over Cespedes' alleged unwillingness to work extra time to acclimate himself to the left field wall in Fenway Park. What's unusual in this case is that the trade of Cespedes was blamed by many for Oakland's second-half slump, but apparently it hasn't been received perfectly in Boston, either. Just as it's a stretch to say the loss of Cespedes triggered Oakland's decline, as was written here, reports of him being a problem in Boston appear to be at least somewhat overblown. www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/24772432/claim-that-cespedes-is-hated-met-with-strong-believable-denials

Latos for Cespedes. I'd pull the trigger. Sabermetric geeks need to get a grip, the Reds absolutely need a right handed masher to pencil in between Votto and Bruce. Can't expect guys like Mike Trout, Nolan Arenado, Longoria or Giancarlo Stanton to be available.

22 HRs makes a masher now a days?

Frazier or Mesoraco are just as much mashers as Cespedes.
BP home run derby exploits just don't always transition to the real game.
The only way I'd offer the Sox Latos would be if Bates or Bogaerts was coming back and that likely isn't going to happen.

---WLW
Reds GM Walt Jocketty has made inquiries with the Red Sox on the availability of SS Deven Marrero according to insider sources.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Reds drafted Deven in the 17th round out of highschool in 2009, he failed to sign and was drafted by the Red Sox in the 1st round out of Arizona State in 2012.
He is regarded as a plus defensive shortstop but his bat is currently a work in progress (he hit .210 - .260 - .285 in 50 games at AAA last season after being promoted from AA where he hit .291 - .371 - .433 in 68 gamesas a 23 year old).
Baseball America ranked him as the 16th best SS prospect entering the 2014 season and just ranked him as the 9th best Red Sox prospect entering the 2015 season (the Red Sox are considered to have a top 3 farm system - 9th may seem low but he'd be higher with most other organizations).
WLW goes on to speculate (with no insider information) that the Reds may be looking to acquire him and Cespedes in a possible Latos deal.

It does sound like a deal they'd only make if they thought Latos was unquestionably healthy... If there's a quick consensus on the board that a trade is good for US..whoa boy. You can bet your butt the other team is getting ripped.

You can bet your butt the other team is getting ripped. If Latos is healthy, it doesn't look like a ripoff. It would help to know more about how other teams see his trade value after this recent news. You're right, it doesn't seem likely that a team would just make this kind of trade as if Latos is a sure bet to be healthy next year...

I'm not a fan of Cesepedes, but him and Marrero I think would be enough for Latos.
However I would first check to see what would take to sign Cueto and if that fails I'd look to Latos.
