Greg Mahle (Reds farmhand Tyler Mahle's older brother) has been assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox by the Angels.

I'm particularly surprised that Brandon Finnegan isn't going. Still, a talented and interesting group of guys sent out by the Reds. All three hitters know how to walk, if nothing else. It's a good opportunity for Stephen Johnson to prove himself to skeptical Reds fans (or show himself to be terrible).
I assume Blandino will play more 2b than SS in the AFL, but we'll see.

Stephen Johnson, not Jackson is going. The pitchers are a nice bunch. The position players, outside of Blandino are pretty friggin pathetic.

His 8 to 12 IP are going to prove/disprove something? The AFL is no different than the rest of the winter leagues, they should be thought of as live practice. Can't take much of anything from them other than the fact that players are getting some more experience.

Can't take much of anything from them other than the fact that players are getting some more experience. A strong performance could get him some positive publicity. He's struck out over a batter an inning in his career, but that's easily written off as those being minor league scrubs. I look forward to seeing how Johnson does, and what scouts say about him. I think he'll be under more scrutiny and closer evaluation in the AFL than he is as another guy out of Pensacola's bullpen. The AFL is different from the rest of the winter leagues in that it's more prestigious, features more highly regarded players, and gets by far the most coverage, both by scouts and writers. Iglesias and DeSclafani are two notible Reds who made an impression in the AFL last year - the former, letting us know a little about him, the second probably leading to his acquisition. As a minor league prospect, if you want to have a few good weeks and make an impression around baseball, there's no better time or place to showcase your skills than the AFL.

Ervin, I believe, is still the organization's minor league homerun leader, with 14 (Winker has 13). I'm not sure how to check, but I think there's a good chance that Ervin's 33 steals also leads the organization. He has 68 BB, and is probably second only to Winker (71 BB) in that category (despite striking out 12 more times). For the season, between Daytona and Pensacola, Ervin has a respectable .347 OBP, despite a below-average BABIP, around ~.270. Worse candidates than Ervin go to the AFL every year. He's the same caliber of prospect as Alex Blandino. Blandino hits for higher average and plays the infield (seemingly 2b in the future), while Ervin steals some bases and plays the outfield. But it's not like one is an asset offensively and the other a liability. They're comparable, with their pros and cons spread out differently. Chad Wallach, eh. Pathetic? I say there could be worse choices. He's not the same caliber as Blandino and Ervin, but he also knows how to walk and has semi-respectable plate discipline. Along with Ervin, Blandino, Winker, Seth Mejias-Brean, young Gavin LaValley he's seemingly one of the better plate discipline guys in a system seemingly full of guys who strikeout too much and walk too little (Aristides Aquino, Yorman Rodriguez, Kyle Waldrop, Taylor Sparks, and so on). He probably has the least power of any of the names above (with SMB and LaValley being the only ones open to debate), but he's also a catcher (at least part time). Wallach has been a bit of a disappointment after hitting .322 last season, but oh well. It'll be his second consecutive season going to the AFL - hopefully he does better this time.

The Peoria Javelinas start their season on Tuesday October 13th. Their regular season ends November 19th, with a championship game on November 21st. So only a couple of weeks left until some Reds prospects are in interesting games again.

I thought marty and jim kelch said that adam duvall may play a little this winter as well?? No idea. I've also heard it suggested that Robert Stephenson and Jon Moscot may play winter ball somewhere, but who knows. I don't really care too much, only the Arizona Fall League is closely covered, and neither is going there.
