Jocko has finally emerged from yet another long snooze long enough to send Kevin Gregg packing.
I have to say Jocko is by far the laziest GM in the game. You can't tell me that some of the names that have hit the waiver wire aren't better than any of the following pieces on our 40-man:
Burke Badenhop Brennan Boesch Jumbo Diaz Chris Dominguez David Holmberg Donald Lutz Jason Marquis Skip Schumaker Kyle Skipworth Josh Smith Pedro Villareal
A full 10% of our 40-man is taken by guys who would not likely find work for any other team.
Here are just a few names who might (or might not) have helped the team:
Javy Guerra -- DFA'd by the Pale Hose -- not very good, but he had something once Edward Mujica -- DFA'd by the Red Sox -- good back of the bullpen arm (A's traded for him) Jorge Rondon -- DFA'd by the Rox but with solid enough AAA #s (Orioles traded for him) Chad Smith -- DFA'd by Angels -- spotty guy with ups and downs (A's traded for him) Ronald Torreyes -- DFA'd by the Astros -- remember him? infielder who makes good contact Anthony Varvaro -- DFA'd by the Red Sox then Cubs -- was good last year, maybe a change of scenery would help
Those are all players who were DFA'd in the past week. Do I want every one of them? No. But I sure think Jocko could replace six or seven of the deadwood on the 40-man roster with some of these guys and improve the overall quality of the team.
Having finally cut Gregg, I'm sure we'll hear from Jocko again sometime in July...

I think some of the guys in the minors are better than some of those guys on that list.

Can't fault a guy for liking what he has....

Your list of available retreads isn't all that much more impressive than the retreads we have. Once upon a time most of our retreads had nice years too.

You can't tell me that one of those guys isn't worth a shot as compared to say, Kyle Skipworth, or Chris Dominguez.

I don't think he is lazy, I just think the game has passed him by. He looks to me like a man floundering in waters that are now over his head.

I agree that Walt should be able to do a better job adding quality depth to the 25 and 40 man roster. That said, I'm not sure waivers ever really yields many good options.

How many claims a year constitutes hard work? What proportion of their rosters came through waiver claims? rosteresource.com Dan Duquette and Billy Beane regularly claim more players off the waiver wire than anyone else, Alex Anthopolus is normally up there too. Jocketty passes on a lot of guys who IMHO could be better 24th/25th men than what they typically throw out there everyday.

I would have definitely claimed Byrd during the playoff hunt so PIT couldn't get him.

I'm interested in a number, if there is a number, not looking to make work for others that I'm not going to do myself. Superficially, the loss in value doesn't seem significant, but it would be interesting if more claims in these cases translated into more talent through waiver on these rosters...
