I would have definitely claimed Byrd during the playoff hunt so PIT couldn't get him. This is different, Jocketty never explained it, and the reporters didn't press him on it after the season...

The goal should be to have the best 25/40 man rosters possible. I don't believe Jocketty is the right GM for a team with limited resources because he doesn't find cheap talent to fill out the roster. Instead he offers 2-4 million yearly multi-year deals to guys that aren't better (and sometimes worse) then the options that regularly hit the wire. That is fine when you have the resources a NY or LA team has, but not with the Reds when you need to make dollars count.
Mind you I'm fine with spending to keep better then league average talent.

There was no excuse for not doing it. Just for what it's worth, Roy Eisenhardt was on campus last Spring, and I had an opportunity to talk to him about this question. He seemed like an interesting case because he's more or less Jocketty's generation. He said that he wouldn't/didn't routinely claim players simply to prevent other teams from acquiring them--citing a range of unforeseen risks/consequences, none of them mysterious--but acknowledged that it happens regularly. I asked him about the Byrd situation, and he said, thoughtfully, that he didn't know what he would have done...

If I'm a owner I ask that question to any GM I am interviewing. If they don't answer that they would claim Byrd they don't get the job.
That is the only acceptable answer. The Reds had a injured LF coming back from major shoulder issues, they had no idea what they had with Ludwick, so it isn't like they were running anything decent out there, a team they were in the think of it with also had a need for a LF.

Ludwick, by his own admission, was not even 50% at the end of 2013 when he came back from injury. Prior in the season, He was already a negative WAR player when he was healthy. So, ccompounding that he was 2X as ineffective as normal, that's a bad way to go into the stretch run when it could have been remedied easily with byrd. Chalk up another bizarre move from the REds FO. Not even factoring in he fell to Pitt, OPSd 900+ while there, then crushed a HR off the Reds in the WC round.

The Byrd issue has been covered for over a year on here. It's a move that is unable to be defended. It would actually make it better if Walt just admitted it was a mishap.
Trading for Byrd and paying him what we are is just basically his way to troll the fans. Obviously not intentionally, but it's just a slap in the face to us who really follow the game.

Jock answers his critics:
Cincinnati Reds @reds 7m7 minutes ago The #Reds today claimed from the @angels RHP Ryan Mattheus (pronounced “Matthews”). He is expected to report tomorrow to Cincinnati.

He is expected to report tomorrow to Cincinnati.Mattheus is probably best known for injuring his pitching hand by punching a locker. That said, I like the move. A no risk, high reward acquisition of a 31 year old. He's a sinkerballer with a 94mph fastball. He was pretty good back in 2012. He supposedly pitched well for the Angels this spring, and then pitched very well in 11 games in AAA. If he stinks they can release him, if he does well he could improve the bullpen. I'm pleased the Reds are at least making some sort of move to try to address the bullpen to bring in someone new, and to make use of their open (or should be open when you include Magill and Lutz) 40 man roster spots. Will Ryan Mattheus work out? Will it be a successful acquisition? Who knows, but I look forward to finding out. At least he's a low-risk gamble rather than a total joke. He apparently specializes in getting ground balls, like Badenhop. Hopefully he doesn't start off the same way as Badenhop.

Yeah have no issues with the move, the Reds have a horrific pen so something had to be done. As long as Jocketty doesn't sign him to a three year ten million dollar deal after fifteen innings its all good.

Obviously, Jocko is repsonding to my criticism...
Mattheus had a couple of decent years for the Nats. Worth a shot.

Good no risk low money signing. Unlike the 1.5 each to Marquis and Gregg. NRI who make club out of spring should never be payed more than league Minimum. Why they agreed to give Marquis,Greeg and Boesch that much I will never understand.

So is Mattheus joining team now or after Iglesias pitches tonight? I wonder if he will take Iglesias spot or will they keep Iglesias here for bullpen help and sent Villarreal down for Mattheus today? I would guess Iglesias goes right back down and Mattheus takes his spot and Villarreal stays till Parra is back off D.L. I hope not I would like to see Iglesias in pen for now. Then start after fire sale. That would do two things. Help pen now and keep his innings in check.

Mattheus won't join the org until tomorrow at the earliest - so doesn't need to be assigned yet.
