Phillip Ervin with a monster game today for Daytona. 2-3, HR, 2B, BB
Through 13 games he's got a .340/.404/.638 line, half of his 16 hits are for extra bases (5 2B and 3 HR) in the pitcher friendly Florida State League. He's also 4 for 4 stealing bases and is playing in CF still. Through roughly 10% of the season, you couldn't ask for a better start from the former first round pick.

In Reds country we often say we want more players with a good approach, who get on base and do more than just strike out... yet we also seem to demand raw power from bench players, too. If we're content with guys who defy the odds and get on base there's a player at Louisville who seems worth keeping an eye on...
Steve Selsky, age 25, 33rd round draft pick in 2011, a righthanded batter playing LF, RF, and 1b. He has a .295 career average in the minors and a .380 career OBP. So far this season he's hitting .370 with a .433 OBP in Louisville. His homerun numbers have gone down (18 in 2012, 13 in 2013, and 2 in 2014) but he keeps getting on base. He doesn't have to be an All Star to contribute and improve the bench.
Josh Satin seems like a similar player, but he's several years older - 30 - and plays 3b. Lately he's started hitting a little better lately, after a bad spring. 27 year old middle infielder Ivan DeJesus and 31 year old Irving Falu are also hitting well.
Chris Dominguez, of course, has been terrible in Louisville. As have Donald Lutz and Dan Johnson.
Carlos Contreras had another good day yesterday out of Louisville's bullpen, and has now struck out 13 batters in 7 innings, with only 2 BBs. He's on the 40 man roster and everything. I have no idea what he has to do to get called up.

Let him establish a little success rather than rushing him up as soon as possible.

Some other pleasant surprises in the farm system are...
Taylor Sparks, 3b... I was surprised he was sent straight from rookie ball to Daytona, but the results have been promising. Hitting .302 (13/43), although with only 2 BBs and 13 Ks. I was skeptical that Sparks would be able to do anything other than strike out... but at least striking out seems to only be part of his game.
Alex Blandino, SS... I've never been a big fan of his, but he has a .426 OBP in Daytona by hitting .270 (10/37), although with 10 BBs and 3 Ks. That looks like some impressive plate discipline - with only 3 strikeouts in ~47 chances it seems like his average is likely to go way up...
Zack Weiss, RHP... a 22 year old reliever in Daytona, he's pitched 7.1 innings with no hits, 1 BB, and 15 Ks. He's struck out 15 of ~22 batters faced? Those numbers are insane. If he keeps that up he deserves to be promoted to Pensacola before long.

Ervin just keeps rolling, 1-2 with 2 BB tonight and hit his 4th HR in 14 games.
Garrett took the loss tonight, but he went 6 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 7 K, 2 R, 1 ER

David Holmberg gave up 10 earned runs in two and a third innings pitched tonight for Louisville, twelve hits and two walks. A glimpse of hope in the Holmberg situation. Delino DeShields said last night that Matt Magill would come off the DL and take Holmberg's spot in the rotation. When asked what Holmberg's role would be he said that was to be determined. Losing your spot in the rotation at AAA could be the first step to cutting ties. Of course they could put him in the pen, in AA, on the DL. So we shall see.

'Glimpse of hope' Holmberg, though unpopular, is 23, and is ranked as the organizations' #21 prospect by MLB.com. They're not just releasing him because of a bad start, no matter how much you want them to. Removing him from Louisville's rotation is a step towards... temporarily removing him from Louisville's rotation, nothing more. He'll probably be back in there when they need a starter (due to injuries or promotion of Iglesias, Lorenzen, Moscot, or even Magill), or when he regains his control. The minors are about player development, especially the development of young players. This is the second year in a row Holmberg has had a rough start to the season, but last year he pitched fine later in the season. Regarding Matt Magill, it seems like his future in the Reds organization, if any, would be as a reliever. If he pitches well in Louisville's rotation he'll quickly become a top candidate to be promoted to the Reds' bullpen, in my opinion. If Magill pitches badly (walking people has been a big problem in his career) he also becomes a candidate to move to Louisville's bullpen, to again work towards a spot in the Reds' bullpen.

Aristides Aquino broke his wrist. I thought he was ranked a lot higher by some than I thought he deserved, so I don't think it's the big loss it'd be with certain other prospects. This might delay his career by a year, but he was years and years away anyway.

Anyone in Columbus last night? Lorenzen looked awful Went into the 7th, but DeShields kept him out there nearly 110 pitches, allowed 5 runs, 11 hits and got hit very hard.
Granted, he was facing a good Clippers lineup, especially Lindor, Swisher and Aguilar (those top 3 had like 8 hits and accounted for all the runs), but he struggled. Hit 95/96 all night, but it got hit really hard.
As for the lineup, the Clippers starter had 68 pitches through 3 and was awful. They pulled him and the pen went 5 scoreless against a hapless Louisville lineup. Was not impressed at all with Suarez. Like not at all. Awful swings.
Rodriguez showed all the tools in the outfield...

This might delay his career by a year, but he was years and years away anyway. He was pretty raw still, but I thought his upside made him worthy of a 9-13 ranking. This will definitely be a big hamper on his development. Years and years is definitely right.

I'm not an overly cautious person when it comes to pitch counts or anything, but why in the hell would Lorenzen be out there for that many pitches for a AAA game in April? Seems pretty ridiculous.

Seth Mejias-Brean has started having an interesting season in AA, after really struggling last season after being promoted.
His average is now up to .275, with a .375 OBP (similar to what it was in A ball), due to all his walks.
