Merasco cannot catch Chapman. How many times was he pulled last year when Chapman came in.

I would have to say Hannigan.
I believe Rodriguez is ready and could take over for Phillips. He wouldn't be as good, but acceptable. Ditto Frazier.
The outfield depth is rather weak, but the Reds do have replacements. the Reds could not lose more than one outfielder without it hurting a lot.
Cozart would hurt because the Reds are short on true shortstops.
But Hannigan is the general on the field. The Reds have pathetic depth at the position.

Well, the figures are in. Here are my thoughts
Latos 4.7 million vs 4.1 million Latos is asking for less than the Reds offered Bailey although he had a better year Give it up Walt, you lost this one.
Bailey (5.8 million vs. 4.75) was given a fair offer and offered more than Latos even though he did not have as good a season or a career as Latos. Walt wins this one. If Homer wants more money he needs to have a better year than Latos.
Choo (8 million vs. 6.75 million) wants about as much as Ludwick. He is a better player Walt loses again.
Heisey (1.65 versus 1.05) Heisey is a back-up outfielde. Walt winsr.
Leake (3.5 Million vs. 2.65) About what Bailey earned last year. Walt wins.
Simon (1.05 vs. .75) For a guy who would be out of baseball save for Walt's good graces. he should be happy with the offer. Started horribly, rebounded great than returned to mediocrity. Walt wins.
The total differneces of all plyers is less than five million for a payroll over 100 million. Latos and Choo shouldn't even be in question. Shame on Walt. The other players are in over their heads. Shame on them.
Heisey

I mentioned Bailey because the contracts with him and Latos will be big. The Reds. I can see either Bailey and Latos having really big years along with Cueto. That is the most secure thing about this team.
I don't see either Baily staying with the team. I believe he will have a big year. There hasn't been any numbers released the two sides are probably far apart at this time. I say both Latos and Bailey go all the way to arbitration hearings. That is a worry.

Ryan is part owner of the Rangers and not a GM. Regardless of the rules it is a little naive to not recognize that nBailey and Ryan have not talked about baseball and playing major league baseball. Every boy that plays baseball in Texas knows who Ryan was.

I think Bruce will eventually find his way to Texas. I am almost sure Bailey will. I would bet he has already talked with Ryan. Reds have him for two more years at best. Might as well get something for them.

Votto, without a doubt. Ever time I think about that knee I see the Twins MVP 1Bman of a few years ago. I am still not sold on Frazier. I think Rodriguez is a better player though so I think it is covered.

I thought Ludwick signed two years for 15 million.
Most of your estimates sound right. I don't know if all the pitchers will make the 25 or Henry Rodriguez.

I think Lombardi was as good of hitter as Piazza. Piazza never won an MVP either.

I think ripping him after his death is a little low class. He was a wild a crazy guy, I remember the time he nearly ran over Adam Dunn chasing down a routine fly in left field. He also got that DWI after Opening day. Because of his craziness, I don't think he had many friends. He probably thoughtafter his limited skills faded he had nothing to live for. I wished he had talked to someone, or someone had talked to him.
Was he mentally ill. Probably close to it.
RIP Ryan Freel. No one ever really knew you.

I am glad to see Ryan get his due, but it always irks me because I think he has always been one of the most underated mistreated players I have ever seen.
To say that he was a prospect is absurd. I don't think the Reds ever considered him a prospect.
He should have started the season with the Reds during Votto's rookie year, but the Reds went with Bako. he was only called up when he was on the verge of winning the AAA batting title. Kinda hard to explain to fans how a player wins the batting crown in the minors yet a player like Bako is blocking his advance to the majors. I also remember saying it was hard to see Soto as ROY when he wasn't even the best rookie catcher. Ryan didn't even get a chance to compete. I will agree that Votto should have gotten the award.
The next season the only reason he got a chance to catch was that he was Arroyo's choice. Then after Votto's migraines Baker put Hernandez at first and literally rode Ryan into the ground. He never got a day off until his average dropped. Baker could have alternated Hernandez and him at first since Hannigan played the position in the minors, but he never did.
I think he is very close to being an all star, but I don't think he would be a very good #2 hitter. Pitchers tend to get careless with him because the pitcher is following him and he is kinda slow for the sacrifice. Maybe he can score more runs this year with Choo leading off.
It also kinda makes a myth of the prospect list. Like Perez. They say he is not a prospect. How would we every know unless we could see him. Hamilton is tired so he just couldn't hit in Arizona. Perez and Rodriguez are still playing. The are not allowed to get tired. Or be in the major leagues.

It may be time to trade Bailey. I know everyone likes him and he should be having a big season. With salaries the way they are both bailey and Latos could ask for 10 million and get it in arbitration. Leake 7 million. Time to bring up some young pitchers. The teams that will continue to be successful will be the ones that can develop their prospects quickly. Forget about pitch counts and innings. Remember in five years the plaer will be gone so get what you can from the arm now.

The 70 team was out of first place one day. It was on the second or third day of the season. The Reds lost a game and were 2-1 while I think the Giants were 2-0. The Reds were back in first the next day and won 70 of their first 100 games. They blew everyone out by mid-season. No disrespect for the 90 Reds though.
The third base play of Robinson in the 70 series was great. Brooks made some great plays going to his left. The greatest fielding play I every saw was the one Brooks made on May. I have never seen any third baseman do it before or since. Brooks went into foul ground nearly in the outfield and threw May out by a step. It was a hrd hit ball. May was slow, but he wasn't that slow. The Reds had runners on 1st and 2nd at the time.
I think Concepcion or Ozzie would have had trouble making that play. I can't of anyone else that could have done it.

I think the 90 team was better than this team although this year will tell. There is no Eric Davis on this team. The 1970 team was great. Bench, Perez and May hit 120 home runs. If it hadn't been for Brooks Robinson the Reds would have won games 1 and 2 and the series would have gone 7 72's team was really good also with Rose Tolan and Morgan 1,2,3. Tolan and Morgan stole 100 bases between them. Nolan was on another planet with a 1.99 ERA. That was the year of Gene Tenance. 76 was probably the best offensively although the pitching and speed might not have been as good as 72, I was only 4 when the Reds won in 61 so I don't remember it. Any team with Pinson and Robinson inthe outfield had to be good. Although it was before my time the 39, 40 teams had to be good

According to the Reds official website brodie Greene is supposed to make the club this year. So I guess he is Cozart's back-up.
