Delino DeShields Jr. is available. He'd be a major longshot to make any MLB squad, but considering his dad being in the Reds organization it would make you wonder if they'd consider it. Just to have a look at him in spring training if nothing else.

At least he could bring some speed to the bench.

Andrew Bailey has had major health problems but could easily become a bullpen contributor if he's healthy...

Interesting to see old friend Josh Ravin listed. I always liked him, but the control never materialized.

I've rarely expected the Reds to take anyone in the Rule 5 draft, but it seems like a VERY likely possibility this year. I'm assuming that the Rule 5 draft order is the same as the regular draft order, which has the Reds picking around #10. I'd be more surprised to see Delano Deshields Jr still available that deep into the draft than I would be to see him selected by the Reds. I'd be shocked if he falls to the Reds and they pass on him.
I'd look at Deshields primarily as a replacement for 40 man roster member Jason Bourgeois (the Reds can easily clear his roster spot to add a replacement), a backup CF, than anyone else. Also he could be used for pinch hitting against LHPs, pinch running, and possibly being used as a defensive replacement (especially if Michael Morse is signed for LF). Although he could also back up Brandon Phillips at 2b, as a significant defensive (and perhaps offensive, especially against LHPs) upgrade over Skip Schumaker.
Kinsm also had an interesting list of pitchers to consider. I'd be reluctant to select somebody named 'Needy' to fill the team's pitching needs, however. It sounds desperate.
I'd be shocked if anyone the Reds exposed to the draft was claimed by another team. If they are, fine.

Trivia for you my fine reds fans, who in the mlb was the last rule 5 pick thats had a great mlb career? Well, there haven't been many/any since they changed the rules in 2006 to add an extra year of control over players before they are exposed to the Rule 5 draft. But, last great career? Johan Santana would probably be the guy, unless you consider Dan Uggla as having had a great career.

It's got to be Santana, very rarely do you get a HOF player in the rule 5 draft, but there have been other notable names. Uggla, Ortiz, Hamilton, etc. Even a guy like Jarod Burton was able to provide the Reds with some quality innings...

Trivia for you my fine reds fans, who in the mlb was the last rule 5 pick thats had a great mlb career? There have been plenty of "good" players taken via rule 5, even after the rule change. Josh Hamilton has hit nearly 200 homeruns since being drafted. Dan Uggla did hit over 200 homeruns. Everth Cabrera has started over 400 games. Darren O'Day and Jared Burton have pitched in nearly 400 major league games each. *Alfredo Simon, Luis Ayala, Joakim Soria, Jose Bautista, Shane Victorino, Ivan Nova, R.A. Dickey, Roberto Clemente, Bobby Bonilla, George Bell, Johan Santana, etc. ---The problem with the current Rule 5 draft isn't that the rules changed but having to protect a player for a full year on the active 25 man roster (even the worst teams in the majors struggle to hold onto someone who may not be mlb ready for a full season). Teams have gotten smarter, if you plan to draft someone who isn't ready it's better to go with a 7th reliever than a hitter - there are far more opportunities to work around one reliever than it is a bench hitter. That said, a team like the Mets could easily non-tender Eric Young - draft Delino DeShields Jr. and save 3 million $ in the process - they meet the same goal - speed, crappy bat, position defense versatility.
