Signed for 2015: RHP Chris Carpenter (minor league contract)
---Carpenter, who turned 29 this past December, pitched last season in Japan. In 413 minor league innings he has allowed 378 H's, 199 BB's, and has 368 K's (3.66 ERA). Chris Carpenter is probably best known as the player Chicago surrendered to the Red Sox as compensation for general manager Theo Epstein following the 2011 season. He pitched in 18 major league games with the Cubs and Rex Sox in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 3rd round of the 2008 draft out of Kent State University, he grew up outside of Toledo. And was ranked amongst the Cubs top 20 prospects by Baseball America four years in a row (post '08, '09, '10, and '11)

I'm pretty sure that this signing was just because Walt thought that he was getting the other Chris Carpenter, in his attempt to have every former Cardinals star end his career in Cincinnati.

Released: 1B Raynay Guerrero, 3B Ery Bernabel, LF Diohanky Mejia, LF Yoel Noel, LF Jose De Luna, LF Olvis Jimenez, LHP Jairo Martinez, RHP Ismael Nunez, RHP Miguel Estevez, RHP Jairon Corcino, RHP Carlos Encarnacion, RHP Alfredo Mateo, RHP John De Leon, RHP David Jones.
---The above were released back in November but I had yet to post the transactions, all 14 of them played for the Reds in the Dominican Summer League last year. And all 14 of them were originally signed by the Reds as International Free Agents out of the Dominican Republic. Jose De Luna is the only one of them to ever have his signing bonus reported (110K$), the other 13 weren't reported because they were likely below 100K$.
Every year the Reds sign a couple of dozen players out of the D.R., in turn they have to release the same amount of players to make room for them. More cuts will come as the DSL starts up.
****I'm finalizing the 2015 Database - and I will post it in a couple of weeks when all rosters are finalized, as of now the Reds have 321 players under contract (their limit is 325).

Released: LHRP/SP Paul Maholm, RF Felix Perez, RHP Wilmer Font
---Paul Maholm was an article XX-B Free agent, meaning the Reds had to either purchase his contract, release him, or give him a 100,000 $ retention bonus to assign him to the minors. He would have made 1,500,000$ had his contract been purchased. He may have requested his release after being notified he wouldn't be purchased - we'll never know. He has an outstanding offer from the Reds to return on a minor league contract if he can't find a more suitable offer elsewhere.
---The Reds signed Felix Perez out of Cuba for 550,000$ in May of 2010. The 30 year old hit .276 - .331 - .394 in over 500 minor league games with the Reds over the past 5 seasons. AAA Louisville's outfield was suffering a roster crunch and Perez fell victim.
---The Reds signed Font to a minor league contract this past December, he was working his way back from bone spur removal surgery last August when he was with the Texas Rangers.

Why was felix perez released, but ryan lamarre still around?? In short they're both basically minor league filler, but one is years younger and a better defender at a more challenging position (CF). Felix Perez is a 30 year old who mostly plays LF and RF, and if he wasn't going to make the Reds at this point he probably never would. Also I think he lost out on a AAA roster crunch to Kyle Waldrop, Yorman Rodriguez, Donald Lutz, and Steve Selsky. The question I have is why they would keep Felix Perez around. Ryan LaMarre is a 26 year old CF who, last I heard, was very highly regarded defensively, even if he's not a good hitter. He missed most of last year with an injury, but seems to be healthy. Presumably he'll be on Louisville or Pensacola's bench as a 5th outfielder, where at least his fielding may help the pitching staff. LaMarre has had two decent, if unremarkable, seasons offensively in AA, even if he's dropped off the list of serious prospects.

I know most will disagree i just wanted to see him up for a few off the bench at bats/pinch hitting

Released: RHRP Euclides Leyer, RHSP Mike Dennhardt, RHRP Austin Salter
---The Reds acquired Euclides Leyer in December from the Chicago White Sox via the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.
---The Reds drafted Dennhardt in the 32nd round of the 2011 draft out of Boston College.
---The Reds drafted Salter in the 31st round of the 2012 draft out of Cisco JC (Texas).
Placed on the Restricted List: 1B Jose Monegro, 3B Cesar Mejia, C Daniel Paula, RHRP Bob Keppel
---Mejia must serve a 72 game suspension for testing positive for metabolite of Boldenone (8/6/14)
---The other 3 (and I'm just speculating here) are likely on the restricted list for failure to report to spring training since the reasoning was never announced.
The Restricted List is essentially an excused but unpaid absence, although a club can pay the player while he is on the Restricted List if the club so chooses.
***A player on the Restricted List does not count against his club's Active List or Reserve List, and a player who is on the Restricted List for any reason other than a suspension for violation of the ban on the use of a prohibited substance does not accrue Service Time while on the Restricted List. A player who is suspended for violation of the ban on the use of a prohibited substance is automatically placed on the Restricted List by MLB, and the suspended player does accrue minor league service time.
Placed on the Temporary Inactive List: 3B Tanner Rahier
---Rahier was arrested a few weeks ago for chucking a stone at a woman's head.
***A player on the Temporarily Inactive List does not count against his club's Active List, but he does count against the club's Reserve List and typically a player is not paid while on the Temporarily Inactive List.
Outrighted: RHRP Sam LeCure, RHSP Dylan Axelrod
---Both will pitch for the AAA Louisville Bats.
