He came in last season with a fairly impressive resume, although his stats were from the PCL. Other than showing a lot of versatility defensively I really didn't see much of anything impressive about his season in Louisville.

Signed for 2015: RHRP Burke Badenhop (major league contract), LHSP/RP Paul Maholm (minor league contract), RHRP Kevin Gregg (minor league contract), RHSP Jason Marquis (minor league contract), C Lou Marson (re-signed minor league contract)
Designated for Assignment: LHSP Ismael Guillon
Some of these happened a week or so ago, I'm just now getting around to posting about them.
---Burke Badenhop turns 32 today - happy birthday. He's a ground ball specialist who was dynamite with the Red Sox last year - 2.29 ERA in 70 games. He's played for 4 different clubs over the past 4 seasons due to being traded three times over that period. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the 19th round of the 2005 draft.
---Paul Maholm, 33 in June, struggled last year - his first season coming out of the bullpen, but he was dealing with torn ACL in his right knee that later required surgery. He is also a ground ball specialist and has limited lefties to a .230 - .292 - .324 line in over 1,300 plate appearances. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round of the 2003 draft.
---Kevin Gregg, 37 in June, managed to rack up 1676 saves with five different organizations from 2007 to 2013 despite having a 4.27 FIP and an even uglier 4.7 BB/9 rate. Last year he failed to find a job until June with the Marlins and was subsequently purchased - posting a hideous 10.00 ERA in 12 games before being placed on the disabled list (requiring bone spurs to be removed from his right shoulder in August). He was originally drafted by the Athletics in the 15th round of the 1996 draft.
---Jason Marquis, turns 37 in August, has managed to rack up 13 plus years of major league service though he's never been more than a 5th starter (career 4.56 ERA in over 300 big league starts). Last year he failed to score a major league job after having Tommy John Surgery on his right elbow in July 2013, after rehabbing he managed to score a minor league job with the Phillies AAA affiliate. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the 1st round of the 1996 draft.
---Lou Marson, turns 29 in June, was once a big time prospect for the Phillies (they drafted him in the 4th round of the 2004 draft) and he was later packaged with others for Cliff Lee in 2009. From 2010 to 2012 he averaged 79 games a year with the Cleveland Indians, but after hitting just .219 - .309 - .299 in 4 years of major league service he was non-tendered. He latched on with the Reds last year, but only saw action in 7 AA games due to a very lengthy rehab stint stemming from a neck/shoulder injury (collision at home plate) in April 2013.
---Ismael Guillon, turns 23 later this month. Prospect valuations see true upside in his stuff but he's never managed to harness it - 5.1 BB/9 in 440 minor league innings. Baseball America ranked him in the top 20 Reds prospects 3 different times, and Kiley McDaniel of fangraphs just ranked him the Reds #21 prospect entering the 2015 season. The Reds are probably hoping he clears waivers so they can outright him to high A, but since he still has an option year left he has a chance to be claimed by someone who thinks they can fix his command issues. He was originally signed by the Reds in October of 2008 as an international free agent out of Venezuela.
*Maholm and Gregg are both Article XX-B free agents, if they fail to make the opening day roster the Reds will have to give them a 100,000$ retention bonus which comes with a June player opt out date, if they wish to retain them.

Signed for 2015: 3B Chris Dominguez (minor league contract)
---Dominguez, who turned 28 this past November, made his big league debut with the Giants in 2014, collecting one hit in 17 at-bats (8 games - 4 starts (all in LF)), although the one hit was memorable — a two-run homer. Over the past 2 and a half seasons he's slashed .278 - .312 - .446 while playing for the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA). He's played primarily 3B in his minor league career but has experience in LF, RF, 1B, and last year played 33 games at SS. He was originally drafted by the Giants in the 3rd round of the 2009 draft out of the University of Louisville. He was designated for assignment in February to open a 40 man spot for Ryan Vogelsong, after clearing waivers he was released upon request. His contract comes with a spring invite.

Former college team mate of fellow Reds farmhand Ryan Wright. Dominguez stats the past two seasons at Fresno have been decent, but it is the PCL after all. A guy hitting .278 there really isn't a whole lot to get excited about. And this past season he had a crap ton of K's.

A guy hitting .278 there really isn't a whole lot to get excited about. And this past season he had a crap ton of K's. The big red flag I see is OBP. .312 throught his time in AAA, .307 there last year, .311 OBP throughout his minor league career. It's one thing if he's a 22, 23 year old, but he's no longer a young prospect. His walks, strikeouts, and lack of improvement in the past three years is alarming. He's the same hitter now that he was when he first arrived in AAA. His increase in homeruns is countered by an increase in strikeout, indicating (to me) that he's just swinging more often. Of course my favorite minor league free agent hitter this winter is Josh Satin, who's been an OBP machine in AAA, and through 75 games with the Mets in 2013. Power is often overvalued, and it's what Dominguez has going for him, and what Satin has going against him.

both players are minor league filler - if they are on the 25 man roster...then something has gone terribly wrong.

Signed for 2015: 3B/LF Edinson Rincon (minor league contract)
---Edinson Rincon, turned 24 this past August, has hit .279 - .349 - .404 in nearly 600 games with the Padres and Royals minor league systems.
He was once a promising prospect for the Padres organization, ranking according to Baseball America as the ninth best Padres prospect prior to the 2010 season, but fell to 16th pre-2011 and 19th pre-2012. BA praised his ability to control the strike zone, work the count and ability to hit breaking balls. However, his defense was questioned heavily, and BA believed that he was destined to end up as a first baseman due to his lack of speed and poor hands.
He was originally signed by the Padres in 2007 as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic, and had his contract purchased in November of 2011 to protect him from the upcoming rule 5 draft. He spent the 2012 season on the Padres 40 man roster at AA San Antonio playing on optional assignment. After tearing his left knee in 2013 spring training he was placed on the DL, and later that June he was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Yasmani Grandal. The Royals subsequently claimed him off waivers and optioned him to AA and placed him on the DL while he rehabbed from left knee surgery. But he was then outrighted off their 40 man roster that September and re-signed by KC to a minor league deal for 2014, after recovering from the knee surgery he saw action in 69 AA games last year playing primarily LF and DH but managed to hit only .237 - .309 - .299.
He's been assigned to the A+ Daytona Tortugas Reserve List for now.

The Reds currently have 305* players under contract for 2015, their limit is 325.
*This number is likely off by a few unannounced international signings since August. This will be remedied once the 2015 media guide is released - likely next week when camp opens.

both players are minor league filler - if they are on the 25 man roster...then something has gone terribly wrong. I'm expecting Josh Satin to make the bench as a utility player... 1b/2b/3b. The Reds went right after him when he became a free agent, signing him about 2 weeks later, I assume that suggests that they like him. That is, of course, assuming that Negron OR Suarez makes the team, rather than both. Satin seems to be competing with Neftali Soto and Donald Lutz for Hannahan/Cairo's former role, and I suspect only one will make the team. They've never demonstrated any sorta faith or commitment to Soto or Lutz. Satin had a fairly impressive 2013 season for the Mets (.279 average, .376 OBP) and I think he deserves another chance in MLB, even after going 3/35 (plus 6 walks) with the Mets last year. Strangely his .256 OBP for the Mets in his horrendous, albeit brief, 2014 season was still higher than Lutz or Soto have put up in their short MLB careers. Satin's career OBP in MiLB (.398) and in AAA (.394) drastically exceeded anything Lutz or Soto have ever put up. Quality ABs? Satin has shown signs of being able to do that, far more than most other bench candidates. I'm expecting a 5 man bench of (with alternate in case of poor performance or injury): - Pena, C (alternately Barnhart) - Schumaker, CF/2b (alternately Bourgeois or extreme long-shot Yorman Rodriguez) - primary role, backup CF - Negron, INF/OF (alternately Suarez, Irving Falu, Ivan de Jesus) - primary role, backup SS/2b - Brennan Boesch, OF (alternately Lutz or Felix Perez) - primary role, pinch hitting bat and backup for Byrd and Bruce - Josh Satin, 3b/1b/2b (alternately Neftali Soto or a second light-hitting shortstop listed above to play 3b) - primary role, pinch hitting bat and backup for Frazier and Votto ...most likely Bourgeois and Lutz get DFAed off the 40 man roster. I do suspect 40 man roster members Barnhart, Suarez, Yorman Rodriguez, and perhaps Kyle Waldrop will be on the 25 man roster sometime in 2015, but at the moment I would bet against them being with the team on opening day. If Bourgeois and Lutz fail to make the team out of spring training I doubt they'll play for the Reds in 2015.

Outrighted: LHSP Ismael Guillon
---Guillon, who lost his 40 man spot to Burke Badenhop, has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to the the Reds AAA Reserve Roster (though that is highly unlikely where he starts the year). No word yet on whether or not he'll still be extended a spring invite to major league camp.

Spent forever in dayton it seems Yes. Daytona is where I think he'll end up. Injuries to others in spring could push him up a level to begin the year. So many guys start the year injured, depth charts are fairly meaningless at this point. That is why each club has like 35 guys for 25 spots at every level, and a good chunk of them will simply be released in two months.
