There's a troubling lack of former Cardinals in these recent transactions. We need to play AAAA the right way...

Signed for 2015: RHRP Jose Cisnero (minor league contract)
---Cisnero, the former starter, missed most of 2014 recovering from an elbow injury that required Tommy John Surgery in May ('14). He has a 9.8 K/9 ratio in 518 minor league innings pitched. He's spent the past 3 seasons on the Astros' 40 man roster and saw major league action in 33 games prior to being outrighted 3 weeks ago. He was originally signed by the Astros as an 18 year old international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2007. He'll turn 26 in April.

Rey Navarro is the one guy out of that entire list that I would really like to see return to the Reds. Navarro signed with BAL Today. Looks as though it's a guaranteed mlb contract too.

Signed for 2015: RF Brennan Boesch (minor league contract)
---Boesch hit .259 - .315 - .414 (42 homeruns) in 380 major league games with the Detroit Tigers from 2010 to 2012. However, over the past two seasons he's managed to get into only 50 major league games due to a recurring oblique injury but that may be behind him now as he put up an impressive .332 - .381 - .636 line in 95 AAA games in the second half of 2014 with the Angels. If he is at full health he could be truly valuable to the Reds next year as a backup outfielder - possibly even as a starter. He could even be in line to replace Heisey if he were to be non-tendered next month. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft out of the University of California, Berkeley (where he was teammates with Josh Satin). He has just over 3 years of major league service time, so he could be controlled via arbitration by the Reds for 3 more years if added to the 40 man roster this season.
*Dependent upon the transaction date on his contract, Boesch will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft and could be a target.
Released: LHP Jose De Sousa
---The soon to be 23 year old De Sousa managed to see action in only 8 games with the Reds last year (in RK AZL ball) due to injury. Over four seasons with the Reds he pitched 109 innings in 49 games, primarily in the Dominican Summer League. He was originally signed by the Reds in July of 2010 as an international free agent out of Venezuela.

If he's healthy, Boesch could become an interesting signing, he's the kind of experienced depth, with some power, that we didn't have available in 2014 when outfielders were injured or underperforming...

Acquired via Trade: RHP Matt Magill
---The 25 year old Magill started 6 games for the Dodgers in 2013 but failed to see mlb action last year - spending his days in AAA. His numbers were quite ugly in those 6 starts but he was only 23 years old. He's seen action in 54 games at the AAA level over the past 2 seasons (28 starts), posting a 4.33 ERA, 13 W's, 8 L's, 171 K's, 109 BB's, and 152 H's in 170 IP. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 31st round of the 2008 draft out of Royal HS in Simi Valley, California. He's best suited to work out of a big league pen, however he must gain better command/control to achieve that status. He was immediately placed on the Reds 40 man roster, and has one option year remaining. Baseball America ranked him as the #16 prospect in the Dodgers system entering the 2014 season, expect him to fall closer to 30 on the Reds upcoming 2015 list.
Lost via Trade: OF Chris Heisey
---Heisey, who turns 30 years old this month, has by all accounts been a very successful 4th outfielder for the past 5 seasons with the Reds. Averaging nearly 110 games a season over that span, with a .247 BA - .299 OBP - .422 SLG line and playing all 3 outfield spots regularly. The Dodgers will have to move at least 2 outfielders this winter for him to see substantial game time in 2015. He was originally drafted by the Reds in the 17th round of the 2006 draft.
Non-Tendered: RHRP Logan Ondrusek, RHRP Curtis Partch
---The soon to be 30 year old Logan Ondrusek was arbitration eligible, in 4.125 years of service with the Reds he played in 281 games - posting a 3.89 ERA, 21 W's, 11 L's, 214 K's, 111 BB's, and 258 H's in 270 IP. He was originally drafted by the Reds in the 13th round of the 2005 draft. He should be able to find a major league job with someone this winter, albeit at a lesser salary than he was projected to make via arbitration.
---The 28 year old Partch was not arbitration eligible, in .130 years of service with the Reds he played in 20 games - posting a 4.75 ERA, 1 W, 1 L, 22 K's, 24 BB's, and 19 H's in 30 IP. He'll be looking at a minor league contract, possibly with the Reds. He was originally drafted by the Reds in the 26th round of the 2007 draft.

Signed for 2015: SS Irving Falu (signed 11/24), RHRP Wilmer Font, RHP Jose de la Torre (signed 11/24), RHRP Marcus Walden, RHRP Jose Flores (all are minor league contracts)
---Falu, 32 next June, has spent the past six seasons playing SS, 2B, 3B, and RF in AAA with KC and MIL - hitting .284 - .342 - .364 in nearly 2,800 plate appearances at that level. He's also seen action in 47 major league games over the past 3 seasons with KC, MIL, and SD. He was outrighted off the Brewers 40 man roster this past August, his 2nd time through the process going unclaimed. He was originally acquired by the Royals in the 21st round of the 2003 draft.
---The 270 lb. Font, 25 in May, has spent his entire professional career with the Rangers, and was outrighted off their 40 man roster this past October after using up all his option years. In 166 career minor league games he has a whopping 10.9 K/9 but it comes with a 4.8 BB/9. He saw action in 5 major league games in two cups of coffee in 2012 and 2013. He had bone spurs in his right elbow last year that forced him to have them cleaned out in August, and is a past Tommy John recipient. He was originally signed by the Rangers as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2006.
---De La Torre, just turned 29, has pitched in nearly 300 minor league games with the NYM, MIL, CLE, and BOS. He's struck out 468 hittters in 438 innings over that span. He also saw action in 7 major league games with the Red Sox in 2013 and was outrighted off the Brewers 40 man roster this past March after being claimed off waivers from the Red Sox. He also spent much of 2014 on the disabled list, and is a past Tommy John recipient as well. He still has 2 option years remaining if he has his contract purchased. He was originally acquired by the Brewers as an undrafted free agent out of Puerto Rico in 2004.
---Walden, 26 this past September, had spent the majority of his professional career as a starter until this past season when the A's tried him out as a reliever. He's seen over 600 innings with the Blue Jays and A's in his minor league career, and is likely best suited as a long man from here on out. He was outrighted off the A's 40 man roster this past June. He also has had Tommy John surgery in his past (2010) but has been healthy ever since. He still has 2 option years remaining if he has his contract purchased. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 9th round of the 2007 draft.
---The 255 lb. Flores, 26 next June, has spent the past 8 years in the minors with the Indians and Athletics organization - seeing action in nearly 300 games. He's never been on a 40 man roster, and would have all 3 of his option years remaining if added to the Reds roster. He could be a closer candidate for the Louisville Bats next season; as he's racked up 43 saves over the past 3 seasons at A+ and AA. He was originally signed by the Indians as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2006.

Acquired via Trade: RHSP Anthony DeSclafani (from MIA), C Chad Wallach (from MIA), SS/2B Eugenio Suarez (from DET), RHSP Jonathaon Crawford (from DET)
---DeSclafani was drafted in the 6th round of the 2011 draft by the Blue Jays (signed for $250K)(traded for Buehrle), he'll turn 25 in April. He's likely the Reds #5 SP'er entering spring training. ---Wallach was drafted in the 5th round of the 2013 draft (signed for $344K), he turned 23 last month. He'll likely start the year in high A Daytona. ---Suarez was signed in 2008 out of Venezuela, he turned 23 this past July. He'll very likely start the year on the opening day roster as a backup infielder, possibly starting SS if Cozart is moved. ---Crawford was drafted in the 1st round of the 2013 draft (signed for $2.002M), he turned 23 last month. He'll likely start the year in high A Daytona, possibly AA.
*DeSclafani and Suarez were added to the Reds 40 man roster.
Lost via Trade: RHSP Mat Latos (to MIA), RHSP/RP Alfredo Simon (to DET)
---Latos and Simon were both entering their final season of team control and would have cost the Reds ~15 M$ combined via arbitration.
Acquired via Rule 5 Draft (Minor League Phase): C Cam Maron (from Mets), RHRP Euclides Leyer (from White Sox)
---Maron was drafted in the 34th round of the 2009 draft, he'll turn 24 in January. He'll likely start the year in AA. ---Leyer was signed in 2009 out of the Dominican Republic, he turns 24 later this month. He'll likely start the year in AA, possibly high A. He was converted to a reliever this year (was a fulltime starter).
Lost via Rule 5 Draft (Minor League Phase): RHSP/RP Tim Crabbe (to the Diamondbacks), 1B Harold Riggins (to the Marlins)
---The Reds drafted Crabbe in the 14th round of the 2009 draft, he'll be 27 in February and recently lost his starting job in AAA. ---The Rockies drafted Riggins in the 7th round of the 2011 draft (the Reds acquired him last year for Jair Jurrjens), he'll be 25 in March and will likely start in high A or AA for the Marlins (if they keep him).

Signed for 2015: C Ramon Cabrera (minor league contract, 3B Neftali Soto (re-signed minor league contract)
---The 25 year old Cabrera had recently been released by the Pirates to clear a 40 man roster spot, he's burned through 2 of his 3 option years (2013 w/ DET and 2014 w/ DET-PIT). He's a career .287 - .355 - .387 hitter in 650 minor league games, he's never appeared above AAA. He's thrown out 132 of 567 would be basestealers (23%). He was originally signed out of Venezuela in 2008.
---Soto rejoins the only organization he's ever played with, the Reds drafted him in the 3rd round of the 2007 draft. Over the past 3 seasons he's amassed a line of .270 - .323 - .410 whilst playing primarily 1B and 3B in AAA. He's seen 34 games at the big league level over the past 2 seasons as well.
***With Satin already attached to AAA this likely means Waldrop will start at 1B in AA as expected.

Signed for 2015: LHRP Jose Mijares (minor league contract w/ Spring Invite)
---The recently turned 30 year old didn't play in 2014 after opting out of his minor league contract with the Red Sox during the last week of spring training (was informed he wouldn't make their opening day squad). In the five seasons prior (2009 through 2013) Mijares pitched in 314 major league games with the Twins, Royals, and Giants. Accumulating a 3.33 ERA in 249 innings pitched, with 254 hits allowed, 103 walks allowed and 224 strikeouts against. He also received a World Series ring with the Giants in 2012. He was originally signed by the Twins as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2002.
He has just over five years of service time so if the Reds waited until mid May to purchase his contract they could have control over him next winter when he'd be arbitration eligible one last time.
***The Reds have officially fallen in love with overweight players coming off of incomplete seasons (Mijares weighs in close to 270 at 5' 11").

Signed for 2015: 3B Jermaine Curtis (minor league contract), RHRP Nathan Adcock (minor league contract)
---Curtis, who turned 27 this past July, spent the past 2 seasons as the starting thirdbaseman for the Cardinals AAA affiliate; posting a line of .256 - .371 - .325 in 230 games at that level. He has exceptional plate discipline but virtually no power. He also saw action in 5 major league games for STL in a small cup of coffeee in 2013. Note: Curtis has 2 option years remaining if added to the Reds 40 man roster this year, but if the Reds were to later outright him off their 40 man roster he'd have the right to choose free agency since he's already been outrighted once. He was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 5th round of the 2008 draft.
---Adcock, who turns 27 in February, has seen action in 43 career major league games; posting a line of 105 IP - 111 H's - 44 BB's - 67 K's - 3.86 ERA. He has played for 5 organizations (SEA, PIT, KC, ARI, & TEX) in the past 6 seasons after being claimed on waivers 4 separate times, but now gets to play in AAA just 50 miles away from his boyhood home and graduating highschool. He's burned through all 3 of his option years, so if he's added to the 40 man roster this season and later placed on waivers (and clears) he'll have the right to opt out of his contract and become a free agent. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the 5th round of the 2006 draft.

Curtis looks like another bit of typical Walt nonsense, overvaluing someone based on being a former Cardinal farmhand. Adcock could be interesting. Couple of things jump out about him. He was a part of the Ian Snell trade(going to Pittsburgh from Seattle), was then released by Pittsburgh and claimed by KC. He made the Royals 25 man roster out of spring training in 2012 in spite of never having pitched above high A-ball. Even had a decent rookie season. His MLB stats are better than his AAA stats and he never pitched in AA. So after getting jerked and bounced around a bit, perhaps he might still find himself.

Signed for 2015: UT Ray Chang (re-signed - minor league contract), RHRP Michael Bowden (minor league contract)
---Chang, who turned 31 this past August, has spent the past 2 seasons bouncing around AA and AAA for the Reds; last year in AA he had a line of .235 - .299 - .302 in 54 games. He's never played above AAA. He was originally signed by the Padres as a NDFA after the 2005 draft.
---Bowden, who turned 28 this past September, has seen action in 103 career major league games; posting a line of 134 IP - 133 H's - 54 BB's - 100 K's - 4.51 ERA. He spent last year playing in Japan after failing to latch on with the Red Sox and Cubs 25 man rosters. He's burned through all 3 of his option years, so if he's added to the 40 man roster this season and later placed on waivers (and clears) he'll have the right to opt out of his contract and become a free agent. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 1st round of the 2005 draft.

Acquired via Trade: LF Marlon Byrd and Cash $
---Marlon will turn 38 later this year, he's a career .278 - .333 - .427 in over 1,400 major league games. With the cash the Phillies have included in the deal the Reds will owe him 4M$ this year and has a vesting 8M$ option next year. He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the 10th round of the 1999 draft.
Lost via Trade: SP Ben Lively
---Lively, who turns 23 in March, has been dominant since being drafted by the Reds in the 4th round of the 2013 draft and could potentially slide into a depleted Phillies 25 man roster later this year if he continues to tear up the minors.
