Of course this game in the newly opened Riverfront Stadium is most famous for Pete Rose bowling over Ray Fosse to win the game in extra innings.
Let's see how well you know the game:
Easy: 1-Name the two Reds elected as starters and their positions. Johnny Bench, Catcher (Lark11) Tony Perez, Third Base (Lark11)
Medium: 2-Who fired the throw to the plate to try and tag out Rose at the plate? Royals CF Amos Otis fired the throw to Ray Fosse
Medium +: 3 - Which two Reds pitchers were on the squad (one did not pitch)? Jim Merritt (psuhistory) Wayne Simpson (psuhistory)
Hard: 4 -- Who scored the tieing run? Astros 2B Joe Morgan 5 -- Who got the hit after Rose? Dodgers 3B Billy Grabarkewitz
Really Hard: 5 -- Name the (first-ever) player elected as a starting position player by a write-in ballot. Rico Carty, having the best season of his career for the Atlanta Braves, was the first starter ever elected. In a season that would see him batting .366 and putting up an OPS of 1.037, winning the NL batting crown.

Well, I think the "easy" answer is Bench at catcher and Perez at third.

Last week, I heard an ESPN radio interview with Steve Garvey about whether Yasiel Puig should be an All Star. In that interview, I THINK they mentioned that Garvey was a write-in All Star candidate. I don't know if he was the first, but I think he was a write-in candidate. So, I'll go with Steve Garvey.

Nope, not Garvey. He was a write-in strater on the 1970 squad. Garvey was still a 3B in 1970 and just transitioning from AAA.

Well, I'm out of my depth now, so I'll just take a wild stab and say Frank Robinson made the throw to try to get Rose at the plate. I don't remember to what field the ball was hit or whether it was cut off, but Frank seems a reasonable guess.

For the pitchers how about Nolan and Maloney. How about Willie Randolph as the write in. I honestly have no idea about that one, I never have really considered all star games to be that big of a deal so I never really have followed them or bothered to see who appeared in what game.

Frank Robinson was the starting right fielder (Forcing Yaz to CF because Frank Howard was in the LF) and was already gone before the 12th inning. Rose's hit was to center.

Good guesses, but no. Maloney was already on the DL at that point after a very rough start. Nolan would win 18 games for the Reds in 1970, but made his only ASG appearance in 1972. The two pitcheres were a lefty-right pair of starters.

I don't remember when Merritt started to develop arm trouble, but I'm going to guess that he didn't pitch. He had a disappointing second half...

I don't know any of this, I'm tempted to cheat...but I won't.

Merritt won 20 games in 1970, but was not the same pitcher the second half. Particularl in September and October. In September, his OBA was .394!

I guess it's time for some hints.
The other hurler was a starter and like Merritt and Nolan would shortly develop arm troubles. He went 18-4 in the 1970 campaign.
The outfielder that tried to peg out Rose at the plate played in the AL West and was a rookie, making his first of four consecutive ASG appearances shortly after the Mets traded him.
The tieing runner would eventually be Rose's teammate.
The hit after Rose's was by a Dodger infielder with a particularly difficult last name.
The write-in starter played LF, sharing the field with Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. This was his one and only ASG appearance on the strength of a monster year which saw him end the season with a 1.037 OPS. He lost out rookie of the year honors a few years earlier to candlestick Allen.
