I guess it's time for some hints. The other hurler was a starter and like Merritt and Nolan would shortly develop arm troubles. He went 18-4 in the 1970 campaign. The outfielder that tried to peg out Rose at the plate played in the AL West and was a rookie, making his first of four consecutive ASG appearances shortly after the Mets traded him. The tieing runner would eventually be Rose's teammate. The hit after Rose's was by a Dodger infielder with a particularly difficult last name. The write-in starter played LF, sharing the field with Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. This was his one and only ASG appearance on the strength of a monster year which saw him end the season with a 1.037 OPS. He lost out rookie of the year honors a few years earlier to Richie (the board is censoring his more common name) Allen.

Did Merritt pitch in the AS game? The brain cells that registered the pitchers in that game while I watched it appear to have bitten the dust...

Did Merritt pitch in the AS game? The brain cells that registered the pitchers in that game while I watched it appear to have bitten the dust... Yes Merritt relieved NL starter Tom Seaver pitching the fourth and fifth innings and giving up one hit to Harmon Killebrew in the 5th and striking out Frank Robinson looking in the 4th. He also faced Carl Yastrzemski and Boog Powell in the 4th and Frank Howard, Davey Johnson, and Bill Freehan in the fifth. The other Reds hurler did not appear.

I have no memory of Merritt pitching: more evidence to support the theory that if brain cells do regenerate, the hard drive is wiped. For the record, I don't know the answer to the AS question, but I do remember most of the 1970 pitchers. Merritt, Nolan, and Maloney are done. Tony Cloninger?

Cloninger was a solid #4 for us in 1970, but he never made it to the ASG.
The pitcher was involved in the Hal McRae trade.

Jim McGlothlin was another starter on that 70's Reds staff. I remember 1970 season very well!
