Both Romano and Davis had short stints in AA to end last year. Both got rocked too, especially Romano. I chose to forget both of those performances.

Signed for 2016: RHSP Alfredo Simon (major league contract)
---Due to injuries to Homer Bailey, Michael Lorenzen, John Lamb, and others...the Reds were on the brink of being shorthanded in their opening day rotation, Simon fixes that to some degree - the aforementioned could push him to a bullpen role upon returning.
The former Red, soon to be 35 years old, will make a 2 M$ base salary and can accrue an additional 1.5 M$ via incentives (he made 5.5 M$ last year via arbitration). Simon has more than 5 years of service, so though he still has all 3 of his options he can't be optioned to the minors without his consent. He was originally signed by the Phillies in July, 1999 out of the Dominican Republic, and has played previously for the TEX, BAL, LAD, CIN, and DET organizations.
Simon struggled badly against opposing left handed hitters last season, and had a 6.77 ERA over his final 19 starts - allowing 180 baserunners in 110 IP (June 20th on)...the Reds certainly hope that does not continue. Simon, has previously stated that he pitched the 2nd half with a hip/knee injury and that is the reasoning for his poor numbers...let's hope so!

Released: LHSP Jonathan Sanchez
---Sanchez's tenure with the Reds organization lasted less than two months. He was a terrible long-shot to make the club, since the end of the 2013 season he's seen action in just one minor league game and zero major league games, the 33 year old may be facing retirement.
In 4 spring appearances he had a 7.94 ERA in 5 and 2/3rds IP, allowing 5 H's and 7 BB's combined with 2 K's.
Optioned to AAA Louisville: SP Robert Stephenson, RP Stephen Johnson, 1B/OF Kyle Waldrop
---The Reds will look to delay the service clock of top prospect Stephenson, while the recently turned 23 year old will look to tackle his walk rate while headlining the Bats' rotation.
---Johnson will get his first taste of AAA ball this season, since he's already on the Reds' 40 man roster he would likely be one of their first call-ups if his performance calls for it.
---Waldrop will look to rebuild on his disastrous 2nd half of the season last year in Louisville.

Released: OF Jordan Yallen, OF Stephen "D.J." Wallace, RHRP P.J. Cerreto
---Yallen was signed as a minor league free agent back in December after he had been released from his contract from the White Sox organization.
---Wallace was signed as a non drafted free agent less than two months ago.
---Cerreto was drafted by the Reds in the 40th round of the 2013 draft and saw action in just 2 games during his minor league career.
Placed on Restricted List: RHSP Jose Veras (DSL)
---The 22 year old Veras was entering his final year of eligibility in the DSL, looking to jump to the states before next year and continue his career as a professional ballplayer (that is now in jeopardy). No word yet on why the placement, either failure to report or drug suspension is the likely cause though.

Veras was placed on the restricted list due to testing positive for Stanozolol, a banned performance enhancing drug, which includes a 72 game suspension without pay (the length of the DSL season).
Stanozolol is a synthetic anabolic steroid derived from testosterone that is sometimes prescribed by veterinarians to encourage muscle growth, red blood cell production, bone density and to stimulate the appetite of weakened animals.

Signed for 2016: RHRP Ross Ohlendorf (major league contract)
---Ohlendorf had been in the Royals spring camp, but was released upon request, earlier in the week, after being informed he would not make their opening day club. It was the 5th straight off-season he was in a camp on a minor league deal.
The 33 year old Ohlendorf has not seen sustained success in the majors since he was with the Pirates back in 2010, in his nearly 7 years of service he's accumulated a 4.84 ERA in 521 IP (561 H's, 190 BB's, and 376 K's). His repertoire consists of a ~92 mph fastball / ~81 mph slider combination.
His 1.31 HR/9 rate ranks as the 21st worst out of the 243 pitchers to accumulate at least 350 IP since his debut, and his 36.9% GB rate ranks as the 27th worst amongst that same group. He's been particularly dreadful against left handed hitters (.872 OPS) in his career and only marginally better against right handed hitters (.758 OPS).
He'll make 800,000$ to pitch for the Reds and has a great many incentives attached to his contract.
He was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 4th round of the 2004 draft, the Reds will be his 9th organization as he has also been a member of the ARI, NYY, PIT, BOS, SDP, WSH, TEX, and KCR organizations.
Aside from his baseball abilities (or lack thereof)...he's a Princeton grad (major - Operations Research and Financial Engineering) whose senior thesis was on the value of major league draft picks.

---The Reds signed Carrithers to a minor league deal approximately 2 months ago, the 31 year old might have a tough time continuing his career as a pro.

Optioned to AAA Louisville: OF Tyler Holt
---Holt hit .217 - .321 - .261 in 46 AB's in 22 spring games. He's seen action in 50 big league games over the past two seasons with CLE and CIN, and will likely be the starting CF'er for the Louisville Bats (and likely be the first callup if the Reds need an outfielder).
Returned Rule 5 Draft Selection: LHRP Chris O'Grady
---O'Grady cleared outright waivers (the other 28 teams passed on him) and has been offered back to the Angels. The Angels have 72 hours to reclaim him for $25,000, at which time he'll be placed on their AAA reserve list. If LAA declines to reclaim him, the Rule 5 restrictions are removed, and CIN retains him, and he can be sent to the minors outright or released. The Reds could additionally work out a trade for him if LAA doesn't necessarily want him back but want additional compensation for his loss.
He saw action in 8 spring games, 9 2/3 IP, 10 H's, 3 BB's, 8 K's, .263 AVG against, and a 9.31 ERA.

Placed on Cincinnati 15 Day DL: SP Anthony DeSclafani, SP John Lamb, SP Michael Lorenzen, SP Jon Moscot, OF Yorman Rodriguez, C Kyle Skipworth
---The 4 pitchers have retroactive DL stints beginning March 25th, YROD's is retroactive to March 27th, and Skipworth's is retroactive to March 31st.
Claimed off Waivers: SP Dan Straily (from SDP)
---With the numerous injuries to the Reds expected rotation they had to find a fill-in elsewhere, the 27 year old Straily is that man. He's started 45 games in the majors over the past 4 seasons with OAK, CHC, and HOU; amassing 260 IP - 237 H - 105 BB - 217 K (4.60 IP). Straily's repertoire consists of a ~90 mph FB, ~83 mph SL, and an ~82 mph CH. He has a GB rate of just 35.5% and a HR/9 rate of 1.35 - which does not bode well for pitching at GABP.
Purchased from AAA Louisville: UT Jordan Pacheco
------The 30 year old Pacheco collected 78 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks last year, batting .242 - .333 - .333. They then designated him for assignment in June. Pacheco has caught only four of the 34 runners who have attempted to steal on him in his career, and he has a career batting line of .278 - .317 - .372 in 346 major league games with COL and ARI; that line is skewed by the fact that he’s spent almost half his career plate appearances in Coors Field. He was originally drafted by the Rockies in the 9th round of the 2007 draft. He only caught 7 innings this spring, so he'll likely be used as the primary backup at 1B and 3B and be utilized as the primary pinch hitter.
Recalled to Cincinnati from AAA Louisville: CF Tyler Holt
---The Reds decided to go with Holt instead of Peraza to begin the season. Holt had been optioned earlier in the week (thought that won't count since he spent less than 20 days on assignment). Holt did not hit well this spring.
Placed on Restricted List: RF Juan Duran
---Duran was suspended for the first 80 games of the season under Major League Baseball's drug program following a positive test (back in Febrauary) for Drostanolone, Stanozolol, and Nandrolone.
Optioned to AAA Louisville: SS Jose Peraza, C Ramon Cabrera
---Peraza should be the starting shortstop for the Louisville Bats, and will likely be the first offensive player called up when an injury presents itself to the 25 man roster.
---Cabrera will be the starting catcher for the Louisville Bats, after losing the bench role to Tucker Barnhart.
Signed for 2016: RHRP Steve Delabar (minor league contract)
---The 32 year old Delabar has pitched in 183 major league games with the Mariners and Blue Jays over the past 5 seasons, amassing 187 IP - 148 H - 92 BB - 232 K (3.95 ERA). He was released by the Blue Jays earlier in the week. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the 29th round of the 2003 draft.
Returned Rule 5 Draft Selection: CF Jake Cave
---Cave cleared outright waivers (the other 28 teams passed on him) and has been offered back to the Yankees. The Yankees have 72 hours to reclaim him for $25,000, at which time he'll be placed on their AAA reserve list. If NYY declines to reclaim him, the Rule 5 restrictions are removed, and CIN retains him, and he can be sent to the minors outright or released. The Reds could additionally work out a trade for him if NYY doesn't necessarily want him back but want additional compensation for his loss.
He saw action in 26 spring games, hitting .255 - .349 - .364 in 55 at bats.
Released: C Julio Morillo, 1B Paul Kronenfeld, 1B Pat Leyland, OF Jon Matthews
---Morillo saw action in 158 minor league games with the Reds, hitting .212 - .282 - .264. The Reds originally signed him as an international free agent out of Venezuela in August, 2009.
---Kronenfeld saw action in 118 minor league games with the Reds, hitting .244 - .328 - .390. The Reds originally drafted him in the 25th round of the 2014 draft.
---Leyland had been signed too a minor league contract back in January.
---Matthews saw action in 275 minor league games with the Reds, hitting .257 - .353 - .338. The Reds originally drafted him in the 8th round of the 2011 draft.

Placed on Cincinnati 15 Day DL: SP Homer Bailey
---Bailey will miss an estimated 40-80 games continuing his rehab.
Recalled to Cincinnati from AAA Louisville: SP Robert Stephenson
---The Reds were forced to decide between Stephenson and purchasing Tim Melville's contract. Stephenson had been optioned earlier in camp (thought that won't count since he spent less than 20 days on assignment). Robert had 4 starts this spring, and finished with a WHIP near 2. It may be a one and done start.

The Reds will make a hundred plus minor league assignments this week to finalize their org rosters, I'll post them and then create a new in-season transactions thread and post the Register which contains information on all ~300 players in the system (probably next weekend).
