Traded: 3B Todd Frazier (to CHW via LAD)
---The All-Star hero will man 3B on the south-side of Chicago next year and bat in the middle of the order next to Abreu.
Acquired via Trade: SS/2B Jose Peraza, OF Scott Schebler, 2B/CF Brandon Dixon
---The soon to be 22 year old Peraza is a consensus top 100 prospect and was the Dodgers #4 prospect overall. He was originally signed by the Braves in July, 2010 out of Venezuela and was traded this past July to the Dodgers for Hector Olivera (in a massive 3 team trade). He saw action in 7 games with the Dodgers late in the year, and has hit .302 in nearly 500 minor league games. He was moved from SS over to 2B due to the presence of Andrelton Simmons and Corey Seager but could move back to SS with the Reds.
---The recently turned 25 year old Schebler was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 26th round of the 2010 draft out of Des Moines Community College (overslot $300,000). He saw action in 19 games with the Dodgers last year, after struggling mightily in 121 games at AAA Oklahoma City .231 - .322 - .410 (w/ a .242 BaBip in the hitter friendly PCL). The three seasons prior to that he was much better and had climbed to 8th in BA's team prospect rankings after 2014, but had fallen to 14th in the most recent rankings.
---The soon to be 24 year old Brandon Dixon, is a "throw-in" prospect in the deal. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the 3rd round of the 2013 draft out of the University of Arizona ($566,500). During the 2012 season in Tucson he manned 1B while current Reds farmhand Seth Mejias-Brean played 3B, the following year Dixon moved to 3B for the Wildcats after Mejias was drafted. Since being drafted, he's been converted to a 2bman. After starting the 2015 season in AA he was demoted mid season after hitting an ugly .244 - .272 - .375, finishing out the year in A+ he hit much better .299 - .358 - .575 (though w/ a little luck - .350 BaBip). He followed up the 2015 season by playing in the Arizona Fall League. His power/speed combo might play up at Great American Ball Park some day as a super utility type player but he's a long shot to become a future big leaguer.
***Peraza and Schebler were added to the Reds 40 man roster, which now stands at 38.

Traded: RP Aroldis Chapman (to NYY)
---Arguably the best closer in the game will be wearing pinstripes next season, assuming he's not suspended.
Acquired via Trade: RHSP William "Rookie" Davis, 3B Eric Jagielo, 2B Tony Renda, RHRP Caleb Cotham
---Davis was drafted by the Yankees in the 14th round of the 2011 draft (550,00$ - overslot). 2016 will be his age 23 season and he'll likely start in AA (possibly A+). He has a 3.90 ERA in 325 minor league innings. He's never lived up to the lofty expectations of the Yankees front office, but is still quite young and coming off a good season in A+. He finished the 2015 season as the Yankees #6 prospect.
---Jagielo was drafted by the Yankees in the 1st round of the 2013 draft (1,839,400$). 2016 will be his age 24 season and he'll likely start in AAA (possibly AA). He's hit .266 - .356 - .469 in 204 minor league games (missing a significant amount of time due to an oblique injury, ankle injury, knee surgery, and being hit in the face), and has been credited with 29 errors in 153 games at 3B. He was ranked as the Yankees #11 prospect following the 2014 season.
---Renda was drafted by the Nationals in the 2nd round of the 2012 draft (500,000$). 2016 will be his age 25 season and he'll likely start in AAA (possibly AA). In nearly 2,000 minor league plate appearances he's hit .285 - .360 - .366 with 87 SB in 107 attempts, but is coming off a disappointing year in AA both defensively and offensively. He was acquired by the Yankees last June in the David Carpenter trade. He was ranked as the Nationals #12 prospect following the 2014 season.
---Cotham was drafted by the Yankees in the 5th round of the 2009 draft (675,000$ - overslot). 2016 will be his age 28 season and he'll likely pitch out of the AAA bullpen (possibly Cincinnati). He has a 3.94 ERA in nearly 400 minor league innings, but has struggled immensely since hitting high A back in 2012. He does not rank amongst the Yankees top 30 prospects.
***Davis and Cotham were added to the Reds 40 man roster, which now stands at 39. All four players have three remaining options.

Signed for 2016: SS Carlos Triunfel (minor league contract), RHRP Pedro Villarreal (re-signed minor league contract), RHRP Ryan Mattheus (re-signed minor league contract)
---Triunfel, the former Baseball America Top 100 prospect, joins his 4th organization in the past 4 years. Prior to signing with the Reds he played in the Giants, Dodgers, and Mariners organizations (having originally signed as a 16 year IFA out of the Dominican Republic in September 2006). He has seen action in 39 major league games (from 2012-2014) with the Mariners and Dodgers; hitting .160 - .188 - .235 in 87 PA's. He's amassed a .270 - .310 - .375 batting line in his 9 year minor league career whilst playing almost exclusively as a shortstop until last year when he played a good chunk of his games at 2B, SS, and 3B. He's out of options, so if he makes the 25 man roster is subsequently sent to the minors he'll have to be placed on waivers beforehand.
---The Reds are the only professional organization Pedro Villarreal has ever played for, drafted by them in the 7th round of the 2008 draft and re-signed on a minor league deal once before. He's seen action in 44 games with the big league squad over the past 4 seasons. He is also out of options, so if he makes the 25 man roster and is subsequently sent to the minors he'll have to be placed on waivers beforehand.
---Mattheus' short stint as a free agent is over, returning to the team that claimed him off waivers last May from the Angels. He was originally drafted by the Rockies back in 2003 and has seen action in 203 major league games over the past 5 major league seasons with the Nationals, Angels, and Reds. Like Carlos and Pedro, Ryan is also out of options, so if he makes the 25 man roster and is subsequently sent to the minors he'll have to be placed on waivers beforehand.

Signed for 2016: 1B/OF Donald Lutz (minor league contract)
---The soon to be 27 year old was originally signed by the Reds in July 2007 as an IFA out of Germany. On April 29, 2013, Lutz became the *1st International Free Agent from Germany to reach the majors when he made his debut with the Reds. He was released from the Reds organization this past June after undergoing Tommy John Surgery due to a near complete tear of his UCL received in a throw from LF to home plate in a game with Cincinnati's Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats.
Lutz made his return to the field with the Brisbane Bandits in November, taking over the role of the team's designated hitter on its run to the first post-season berth the squad has seen in the six-year history of the revamped Australian Baseball League, hitting .288 - .329 - .525 in 20 games thus far.
Lutz has previously burned through all of his major league options.
*Lutz was born in the states but grew up in Germany, Max Kepler became the first German born IFA signee out of Germany to debut in the majors this past season.

Signed for 2016: C/1B Jordan Pacheco (minor league contract)
---Pacheco, who turns 30 later this month, collected 78 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks last year, batting .242 - .333 - .333. They then designated him for assignment in June. Pacheco has caught only four of the 34 runners who have attempted to steal on him in his career, and he has a career batting line of .278 - .317 - .372 in 346 major league games with COL and ARI; that line is skewed by the fact that he’s spent almost half his career plate appearances in Coors Field. He was originally drafted by the Rockies in the 9th round of the 2007 draft. He's out of options and has been outrighted twice before, so if he were to be added to the Reds 25 man roster at any point this season he'd have to then clear waivers to be sent to the minors.
Jordan receives a spring camp invite.

Signed for 2016: UT Alden Carrithers (minor league contract)
---The recently turned 31 year old Carrithers has never played in the majors (in fact he's never been added to a 40 man roster). He was originally selected by the Tigers in the 15th round of the 2008 draft out of UCLA. He played 3 years for the Tigers org before being released, then 1 with the White Sox org before being released, 2 with the Braves org before becoming a 6 year minor league FA, and finally the past 2 with the A's organization. He's a career .294 - .397 - .361 hitter in nearly 2,500 minor league PA's (just 10 homeruns). He was originally drafted as a 2Bman but has played primarily 3B and LF the past four seasons.

He won a world series ring with the Giants in 2010, the team that drafted him in the 27th round of the 2004 draft out of Ohio Dominican University.

Optioned to AA Pensacola: SP Amir Garrett, SP William Davis, SP Sal Romano
---None of the 3 have yet to see action above the A+ level.
Released: RP Carlos Contreras
---Contreras was optioned to AAA Louisville (not to report) and was released after clearing revocable waivers. No word yet on exactly why the Reds went this route, this procedural move is typical when a player has an offer to play overseas though. Contreras was originally signed by the Reds in March of 2008 out of the Dominican Republic. He saw action in 39 games (1.000 year of service) over the past two seasons.
