Signed for 2016: LHSP Ismael Guillon (re-signed minor league contract)
---Guillon missed the entire season due to injury, he would have qualified as a six-year minor league free agent five days after the world series ended had he not resigned. The Reds originally signed him out of Venezuela in October of 2008. Guillon had his contract purchased by the Reds in November of 2012 to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, he spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons on optional assignment prior to being outrighted off the Reds 40 man roster this past February. He's yet to make his mlb debut and still has one option remaining if he's ever added to the Reds 40 man roster again. He will be eligible for the upcoming Rule 5 draft (though it's highly unlikely anyone will pick him). If he isn't cut by opening day he'll likely play for A+ Daytona next year.
Released: LHRP Yean Paredes
---The Reds signed Paredes out of the Dominican Republic in October of 2013, he saw action in just 4 games with the DSL Rojos this year.

Outrighted: RP Nate Adcock, RP Collin Balester, SP David Holmberg, SP Josh Smith, OF Brennan Boesch, OF Jason Bourgeois, IF Kris Negron
---No surprises here. Boesch and Bourgeois were arb eligilble and thus non-tender candidates.
All of the players outrighted with the exception of Josh Smith will qualify as six year minor league free agents 5 days after the world series ends and will likely elect to do so.
The Reds 40 man roster now stands at 40, just a week shy of free agency.

Hanigan was nothing special but I can't believe the best we could get for him was a soft-tossing lefty who couldn't locate. Guy is nothing more than organizational filler. All the guys outrighted today are, but Holmberg, according to some, had a "bright future and silly Reds fans are too quick to write him off!"

Purchased: RHP Robert Stephenson, RHP Sal Romano, and RHP Stephen Johnson.
---The Reds have until midnight tomorrow to protect upcoming rule 5 draft eligible players by adding them to their 40 man roster, they got a head start today. The three aforementioned players may very well be the only players they choose to protect.
The soon to be 23 year old starter, Robert Stephenson, was originally drafted by the Reds in the 1st round of the 2011 draft. The University of Washington commit signed for 2,000,000$. He'll likely start the year in AAA, preserving his service clock. Stephenson has front of the rotation potential - he's a consensus Top 50 Prospect.
The recently turned 22 year old starter, Sal Romano, was originally drafted by the Reds in the 23rd round of the 2011 draft. He was given a 450,000$ overslot signing bonus (late 2nd round money) to forego his commitment to the University of Tennessee. The potential back of the rotation starter will likely begin the year in AA.
And the soon to be 25 year old reliever, Stephen Johnson, was originally drafted by the Giants in the 6th round of the 2012 draft (180,000$ signing bonus). He was acquired this past summer by the Reds in return for OF'er Marlon Byrd. He'll likely start the year in AAA, but could potentially make the Reds opening day squad.

Signed for 2016: RHRP Blake Wood (major league contract)
---Wood was an article XX-D free agent (only a few of them sign guaranteed contracts each winter), as he recently became a six year minor league free agent. He was originally drafted in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft by the Kansas City Royals, he's also played for the Indians and Pirates after being claimed off waivers twice. He has played in 115 major league games but only 9 over the past 4 seasons. He spent last season as the Pirates AAA closer. He's out of options and has been outrighted once before so he can choose to elect free agency if the Reds decide to pass him through waivers later on.

After reaching free agency 12 months ago as a six year minor league free agent he signed with the Tigers and played this past season for their AAA affiliate. He's a good candidate to be transitioned into Louisville's bullpen this coming season.
---Diaz was originally signed by the Astros in 2006 as an international free agent out of Colombia. He's also played with the Cubs and Red Sox under minor league contracts. He's never reached the majors, reaching AAA for the first time last season.

Villarreal was drafted by the Reds in the 7th round of the 2008 draft and has seen action in 44 games with the Reds over the past 4 seasons. This is the second time the Reds have released Pedro. LaMarre was drafted by the Reds in the 2nd round of the 2010 draft and saw action in 21 games with the big league squad this past season. This is the second time the Reds have released Ryan. Mattheus and Villarreal were entering the 2016 season without options remaining.

Acquired via Rule 5 Draft: CF Jake Cave (major league phase), LHRP Chris O'Grady (major league phase), RHRP Ariel Hernandez (AAA phase), OF Pin-Chieh Chen (AAA phase)
---Jake Cave (23 yr old) was drafted by the Yankees out of Kecoughtan HS (VA) in the 6th round of the 2011 draft ($800,000 - LSU Commit). He's played the past 5 seasons with the Yankees organization (technically only past 3 - played just 1 game 1st season, and missed 2nd season due to injury). He received a late season callup to AAA last year. He's a career .285 - .346 - .391 hitter.
---Chris O'Grady (soon to be 26 yrs old) was drafted by the Angels out of George Mason University in the 10th round of the 2012 draft ($50,000). He's pitched the past 5 seasons with the Angels organization, reaching AAA at the end of last season. In his 210 inning career he's allowed 195 H's, 52 BB's, 198 K's.
---Pin-Chieh Chen (24 yr old) was signed by the Cubs out of Taiwan in June, 2009 ($300,000). He was signed as a 2bman but was quickly converted to an outfielder. He's played the past 6 seasons with the Cubs organization and reached AA at the end of last season. He's a career .269 - .352 - .359 hitter.
---Ariel Hernandez (soon to be 24 yrs old) was signed by the Giants out of the Dominican Republic in September, 2008. He pitched 6 seasons with them (actually 5 - missed the last one due to injury) and was then released. He caught on with the Frontier Greys of the Independent Leagues in 2015, pitching only 2 games with them before being signed with the Diamondbacks. He pitched the rest of the season in low A ball (6.04 ERA in 22 games).
***Cave and O'Grady were immediately placed on the Reds 40 Man Roster. Though Cave and O'Grady both have 3 options remaining, neither can be optioned to the minors this year per rules of the Rule 5 draft.
***Chen and Hernandez are on the Reds AAA Reserve roster (38 strong) but can be assigned to any level without punishment of return.
