Just compare their work with the rest of the league's beat writers. I have little sense of what Fay or Rosecrans think about the Reds, as opposed to what the Reds say about themselves. This should be a problem for any journalist: it should be possible to establish an independent, critical perspective without losing the respect of officers/players in the organization. But whether this is a problem with the Reds, or with the Enquirer, or some combination of the two is harder to say. Daugherty is sometimes more critical, but he's also more removed from the daily grind of the season and therefore less effective (if not irrelevant). There's no question that the standard for Reds news could be higher, but changing the reporters wouldn't make all that much difference if the problem is more systemic... It also seems like Fay and Rosecrans recently have become more involved in the Cincinnati community, and that should be taken into account too...

For this being a huge blow up story on our website now thanks to Minneapolis, there is still zero mention on the Reds website or MLB.com.
We sure this is legit yet?

Wow. Didn't think he stood a chance with most the other guys we have/had in camp being at least as good as him and much cheaper. Guess throwing money away now a days comes pretty easy for some teams. They wanted to cut payroll by trading proven #3 starter Mat Latos, so they could have room to pay Kevin Gregg? This team doesn't make sense. This planning for the future while trying to compete thing doesn't seem to be working for the Reds.

Heck, all the newly acquired pitchers still in camp (DeSclafani, Gregg, Marquis, Badenhop) combined get paid less than half Mat Latos' $9.4m contract.

Maybe the beat writers felt sorry for the fans and didn't want to have to be the ones to break the news?

Yep you don't pay replacement level veterans a cent over the minimum when there is plenty of replacement level talent out there to be had. I wouldn't have minded at all giving Gary Brown who was just DFA by the Giants today a shot over any of that group. Hopefully the Reds didn't send down a useful arm like Jumbo so Gregg can come in and stink it up. He's been a crap reliever for probably close to a decade now. Gary Brown still has two options, someone with open 40 man slots should grab him (I wouldn't be shocked if he makes the Phillies opening day squad). Brown picked up by the Cardinals...
