One of the interesting aspects of several posts is that they make a very persuasive case for Villareal's lack of value. If we assume that the Reds were actually afraid of losing him, this begs the question about the perceptions of his value behind this fear. He's currently a relief pitcher, but it's not like he's a rider mower that's been converted to a push model, with the parts discarded. He's younger than LeCure, with much more recent starting experience, at a moment when some clubs are looking for marginal rotation types...
Again, assuming the Reds were actually concerned about losing him--a difficult premise, in some ways--this is reasonable speculation about why. Arguments about his marginal value, even as a reliever, don't help much in explaining the Reds' decision...

Pedro Villarreal has been outrighted before, if they want him for depth and were worried he's leave that could explain why he wasn't outrighted. This could be part of it, more concern that he'd leave than that someone else would pick him up. I think LeCure will contribute before the season is over, so this could end up a clever timing play, given that the Reds didn't want to lose either of them. I still think it's an oversight, someone should have picked him up...

Dylan Axelrod has never been outrighted, so as long as they felt he wouldn't be claimed on waivers (safe bet) and still wanted him for depth he was a good choice to be outrighted. . Axelrod had been previously outrighted by the White Sox. He was added to the 40-man last year when the Reds called him up.

I just noticed that every game tonight is listed as an MLB.TV free game. Including the Reds, obviously, at 7:07 PM. In case anyone wants to see Jason Marquis pitch in Montreal against Mark Buehrle and the Blue Jays.

No he wasn't, he was nontendered. The Sox then resigned him to a minor league deal, and later traded him to the Reds for cash. And then the Reds purchased his contract. He's never been outrighted.

Royals sent RHP Louis Coleman outright to Triple-A Omaha.
Coleman passed through waivers unclaimed and will stick around as depth in the minors. The 29-year-old holds a career 3.25 ERA and 9.6 K/9 rate over 148 relief appearances at the big league level, so it's a bit surprising that he wasn't scooped up.
This is what is frustrating IMO. Decent reliever who struggled a little last year but I'm still going to make the case that I'd rather have him in the bullpen over Hoover. Obviously dropping Villareal or Dennick off the 40 not an option though.

Reds announced their lineup for today's game, which may also be the opening day lineup...
1. Hamilton, CF 2. Votto, 1b 3. Frazier, 3b 4. Mesoraco, C 5. Byrd, LF 6. Bruce, RF 7. Phillips, 2b 8. Cozart, SS 9. Marquez Smith, DH (okay, NOT that)
Promising development, in my opinion, that Phillips is hitting 7th. I'd prefer to flip Votto and Frazier, but no major objection (like I'd have with Phillips hitting 3rd or Mesoraco 7th).
In Reds country no lineup is perfect or can go without criticism, but this one seems to be deserving of about as little scrutiny as any option...

Jason Marquis pitched 5 shutout innings against the Blue Jays' starting lineup, allowing only one base runner, a single (a tough ground ball to Votto, which I think he would've had if he was playing on regular grass). The Blue Jays broadcasters only seemed to have nice things to say about Marquis' performance, including that it may be possible to teach old dogs new tricks.
The Blue Jays broadcaster probably would be fired in Cincinnati for what he said about Skip Schumaker, something about how he's a good player who can help your team win in a lot of ways. Blasphemy.
Billy Hamilton had 2 hits, including an excellent bunt single.
Only the second time I've seen video of Badenhop pitch this spring, but he did fine today. He gave up a double past Dominguez, which I think Frazier would have at least knocked down. Again I wonder if the ball would be rolling so fast on real grass.
Right now 1b/LF/RF Steve Selsky is playing CF. Ouch. At least he got a hit.

Marquis consistently kept the ball down, good downward movement on everything. He gives up a lot of contact, not much velocity. But if he stays this sharp down in the strike zone, he could be a pleasant surprise...

Cingrani's breaking ball seems improved. He threw a couple of real nice ones against the Blue Jays.
