Really, Houston? "FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Astros have agreed to terms with Scott Feldman on a three-year, $30 million contract. Feldman still needs to pass a physical in order to make the deal official. The big right-hander signed for $6 million last winter but is able to cash in after putting up a 3.86 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 132/56 K/BB ratio in 181 2/3 innings. If the Astros don't make any other moves with their rotation, Feldman figures to be their Opening Day starter." Some agents and teams are convinced that the three-year, $30MM deal the Astros gave free agent pitcher Scott Feldman has been a wrench in talks for others since agents feel obligated to also shoot for that type of "lottery ticket" contract, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com.

Still not getting it. The Astros are lousy with money and severely deficient in talent. If they are comfortable giving Scott Feldman 3/$30M, then why not just go 7/$140M for Choo instead. A $10M AAV for Feldman or a $20M AAV for Choo? Seems like a no-brainer to me. An outfield of Fowler/Springer/Choo is nothing to sneeze at.

Seems like a no-brainer to me as well, just say no to Feldman and Choo.
Though I'm still not sure why you think Choo would sign there.

Right now, 7/$140M would be the high bidder. And, we continue to disagree on just how close/far the Astros are from competitiveness. If you had to bet $1000 on who wins the World Series first, Mariners or Astros, where would you put your money?

SEA lol Yeah, I wouldn't either, I hate to lose money far money than I enjoy winning it, but if I had to bet then I'd put it on Houston.

"According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, one veteran GM believes that Shin-Soo Choo could end up signing with the Astros. It would be a surprising landing spot, as the Rangers and Mariners have been mentioned most frequently in recent days, but CBS Sports' Jon Heyman wrote about the possibility prior to the offseason. The Astros certainly have the payroll space and GM Jeff Luhnow values on-base percentage, but Choo's asking price is exceptionally high. While one report has him asking for something similar to Jacoby Ellsbury's seven-year, $153 million deal with the Yankees, another has him asking for an eight-year deal." I think we've reached the point in every offseason where you ask enough insiders enough questions you're bound to get some answers that are publishable. "Could" is great this time of the year.

When does the Players Union start freaking out?
To date only 86 players have signed major league contracts (some of which were non-tendered). Over the previous 6 off-season's between 107 and 139 players ultimately signed major league contracts, with an average of 121.
There are potentially; less than a handful of players on the offensive side of the ball that will eventually sign a guaranteed contract: Drew, Morales, and Cruz. Possibly Young, Reynolds, and Buck. Aside from them, the rest may be looking at minor league contracts.
If all of the above signed major league deals that would still require at least 15 pitchers to sign big league deals as well, to match the previous 6 year low. That could be a tall order.
Pitchers and Catchers report to spring camps in 5 weeks, and GM's are now focused on locking up arbitration eligible players.
There could be a long list of Article XX(B) Free Agents this spring. Free agents who qualify for this distinction are those who have at least six years of Major League service time and had a Major League contract expire at the end of the previous season, but signed a minor league deal ten or more days prior to Opening Day. By the deadline, teams with these players in camp need to decide whether to: >Add the player to their 25-man roster or Major League disabled list (or agree to do so in writing). >Grant the player his outright release from the minor league contract so that he may pursue opportunities with other teams. >Pay the player a $100K retention bonus to keep him in the organization beyond the deadline and send him to the minors.

League-Wide Update on 40 man roster counts:The Mets and Diamondbacks are at 38 The Cardinals, Braves, Brewers, Giants, and Orioles are at 39 Everyone else is at 40^ ^(The Yankees are over 40 and must DFA 2 players to make room for announced yet unofficial signings) EDIT: The Rays DFA'd Jerry Sands today, the Yankees are now the only team over their 40 man limit. The Yankees today dfa'd Vernon Wells to clear a roster spot. Wells is owed $21MM this season, $18.6MM of which comes from the Angels, with the Yankees on the hook for just $2.4MM. Alex Anthropolous deserves GM of the year every single year that Vernon Wells' contract is off the books. That was, and is, an unbelievable deal for the Jays.

I'd probably take him for 2 million over Skip, he can at least knock a homerun off a lefty late in a game.

Lance Berkman has announced his retirement. The 6 time All-Star made 125 million over his 15 year career. Michael Young has also announced his retirement, the 7 time All-Star made over 90 million during his 13 year big league career. According to Ken Rosenthal, Young had three "good offers," including one from the Dodgers -- the last team he played for in his Major League career. Ultimately, Young chose to spend time with his family.
