Gordon Beckham. draft.mlblogs.com/It appears fairly certain the Reds will be taking University of Georgia shortstop with the No. 7 overall pick. They've long been associated with a variety of college players, mostly bats (Yonder Alonso) and also RHP Aaron Crow, but it's looking like the middle-infielder who's had a monster season for the super-regional bound Bulldogs (.397, 24 HR, 65 RBI, 1.286 OPS, 17 SB) will be joining the Reds organization tomorrow. If Krivksy was still GM, we'd know this isn't true. However, with Jock at the helm, somehow this rings true for me.

Not sure why we would pass on middle of the order clean-up type of hitter to take a #2 hitter in G Beckham. I've also seen reports that the Reds are definitely taking Brett Lawire, and others that say the Reds are definitely taking Yonder Alonso. At least we'll know the truth around 2:45 today, right in the middle of the Reds game.

This is the only player I will be truly upset about us taking. He has barely any upside at all and is AT BEST going to be a solid, slightly above average SS.

G Beckham is about my 8th choice, but he does have upside. He can essentially be Keppinger with more power and OBP skills and better defense.
Here is how I would have my Big Board if I were the Reds (top 12):
Tim Beckham Brian Matusz Pedro Alvarez Eric Hosmer Aaron Crow Buster Posey Yonder Alonso Justin Smoak Gordon Beckham Christian Friedrich Brett Lawrie Tim Melville

The Reds do have a major need at SS. I really have no problems with it, he should be able to climb fast and maybe be ready at some point in 2010. SS doesn't need to be flashy in the field just make all the plays and get to more then Keppinger can. A SS that can hit .300 with 15-20 homers and have a solid OBP isn't exactly a bad thing.
Now if he has to move to 2B or 3B then yes I would agree that it would be a bad choice.
I rather they take best availible, but if you are going to organizational need first that would be SS.

I don't think he has the tools to warrant a 7th overall pick. Not very fast, just ok range, ok power, ok average... he has no single tool that even seperates him. He is a SS in a draft that doesn't have other SS's other then Beckham and Kelly. He is the only college SS good enough to go in the first round and his rarity in this draft is what is pushing him up so high. IMO

I don't think it's out of the question that G Beckham could hit 25-30 HR's in GABP.

The thing I don't get is that people clamor for the Reds to have more Keppinger like hitters, and when they target someone that is basically Keppinger 2.0 they clammor for more hitters that project to be like Dunn.(LOL)
I think Beckham will be a solid pick. Lacks the flash but will be what the Reds need the most. As long as his defense stays above average and he can stay at SS I have no problems with him at 7.
Right now the Reds have two guys that really aren't good enough defensively for the postion (JHJ and Keppinger) and another that probably doesn't have the bat to warrent running him out there (Janish though I would like to confirm that) There really isn't anyone else in the system that projects to play ML SS and hit.
Either have to shell out the cash, or trade for one and good SS's tend to be highly valued.
As long as its not a major reach, and its not, its best to get one in the draft.
Beckham won't be the best player availible at that point in the draft, but he will be the one that the Reds need the most.

Beckham could be ready as soon as 2010 and start this year in High A if he signs quickly enough, and next season in AA. That is a major plus.

Baseball America is usually pretty accurate with their final mock draft, but I have to question Posey to the Marlins. The Fish almost always go pitching in the 1st round and they usually don't exceed slot money, so Posey seems an odd prediction.

schellis, everybody likes Kepp....however Kepp isn't the type of player you draft in the first round. He's not great anywhere, just solid everywhere.

Agreed, but Beckham isn't Kepp, he's a guy that projects to do everything better then average, just nothing really great.
A SS that can do everything better then average is a pretty good player.
And as I said draft for organizational need if you have to as long as its not a major reach. Considering at worst Beckham is considered a top 15 pick I don't think it really is a major reach.
