I'm not much of a Cantu fan, but I liked the acquisition because it seemed like we got value for pennies on the dollar. Oddly enough, we turned around and gave that value away by cutting Cantu loose. I still don't quite understand all that was involved there, because I don't see any good rationale behind dumping him like that.
As it stands, Cantu has landed on his feet in Florida and is hitting well. He's set to get a lot of time at third, where is his glove is weak, but he can still hit a little bit.
Jorge Cantu had a three-run homer and a double to lead the Marlins to a 7-5 win over the Mets on Wednesday. Cantu became the Marlins' starter at third base with the decision to let Jose Castillo goes. It would seem to mean Florida has again committed to sporting the game's worst defensive infield, though Cantu may prove to be a little better than Miguel Cabrera was last year. He's a candidate to hit 20 homers if he can last as a regular.
I wonder if Krivsky regrets cutting him loose. Even if they didn't see him as a fit in the organization, I'd think they could deal him for something of value rather than losing him for nothing. It still seems like a bad move on Wayne's part.

Grabbing Cantu on the cheap was another nice move by Krivsky. Sweaterpants scares the hell out of me, as some of the moves he makes simply defy logic. However, the one area in which he's consistently surprised me is Major League scouting. Having 2 Rule 5 picks thrive in one year is extremely rare, grabbing Phillips on the cheap was a fantastic move, Keppinger looks like a keeper, and Volquez is exceeding my expectations thus far. Cantu could have been a solid infield backup, and I agree that they could have gotten something for him. I'd be a lot less worried about it if they were looking to clear roster space for somebody other than Sergio Valenzuela.

Yeah I actually disliked the Jorge situation more than "THE TRADE"
I think Jorge did fine while he was here and think he has more potential and talent then Andy Phillips who might make this team. I like him more than Jolbert Cabreara also. Dumpin him for Sergio guy just didnt make sense to me. Plus we lost Calvin Medlock in the process.
