...one player around which to build your franchise, who would it be???
For me, it's still David Wright. He's a young, five tool player who is only going to get better. I'd love to have him as the foundation for my organization.
That said, I'm also tempted by Chase Utley, who is just playing out of his mind this year. If he keeps this up, he'll have an MVP or two in his near future.

David Wright is a great choice with a wild card choice of possibly Justin Upton.

I'd probably say David Wright, but Hanley Ramirez and Chase Utley are good choices.
I don't think a good choice would be a pitcher or an outfielder.

I like Miquel Cabrera. Most likely will have to be moved back to the OF or 1B in time but I think he's a yearly threat to win the triple crown.

Hands down it would be Hanley Ramirez. His production at the plate is phenomenal. Not to mention he plays gold glove caliber defense at the most important position.
For a pitcher it would have to be Felix Hernandez. A 22 year old with 400+ big league innings. And to think he's now starting to really figure out his stuff.
O and Justin Upton is a good one, but what about Adam Jones as a wild card. He just screams Eric Davis.

I think you are over-rating Hanley's defense a bit, but its hard to argue what he can do at the plate at such a young age.

Yeah, I would've picked Hanley, but from everything I've read is defense is a half step above atrocious. In fact, I've heard some talk about the need to move him to centerfield. There's no denying his offensive skills, but he needs to improve his glove work if he wants to stay at short.

I'm also tempted to pick a Ramirez, the Manny variety...
