Worst leadoff hitting situation in all of baseball. Mexican and Japanese baseball included. It's no great mystery why no one wanted Corey Patterson until the Reds came calling in early March. Phillips is trying to pull everything when everyone knows he is a fantastic hitter when he uses center and right-center field. (Is the hitting coach allowed to talk to players between AB's?) Yeah, they won in 10 innings but why was the game in 10 innings in the first place? Because this team is an awful hitting group. Keppinger and Votto are the only ones who don't swing with an upper cut. GABP to blame for that. Not a decent right hand bat on the bench. Krivsky to blame for that. If this team hits at all they are probably 11-8 right now. Dodgers and Penny come in tomorrow. I can't possibly be optimistic about that outcome.

This team is a total mess right now. You can even see it in their body language at the plate. Zero confidence and they look lifeless. Yes, it's way early but the problem is, the Reds are in the only six team division in baseball. You get down in this division and you have to climb over five other teams.
Pete McKannon did a pretty good job, didn't he?

Well, he managed more than 20 games, for one thing, and we lost more than 12 of them. Meaning the two are not yet comparable.

Pete McKannon did a pretty good job, didn't he? I do slightly blame Dusty for trying to adjust the hitting style of the team. This is a home run hitting team - which is exactly what it should be playing in GABP. They did frustrate us by leaving a lot of runners on base and striking out a lot. However, they SCORED runs one way or another. I wish we had last year's offense. Since we have mostly the same players (Bako is better than we had and Patterson is worse - otherwise it's the same team), I think Dusty has something to do with it. On top of everything else, his stubborness when it comes to Patterson leading off is disgusting.

If we could find a happy medium between the homers and the little ball we'd be rolling. I think that's Dusty's hope, and ideally we're just experiencing the rough patch that comes with that transition.
