Royals acquired RHP Brad Salmon from the Reds for a player to be named. The Reds never had much faith in Salmon, even though he was decent enough in limited action last year (4.13 ERA, 22/10 K/BB ratio in 24 IP). He wasn't going to make the team out of spring training, and he probably won't have a spot on the Royals either, but a fresh start should be good for him. He can be of use in middle relief. Related: RedsInteresting to see the Reds-Royals again hook up on a trade. Salmon is the kinda guy who will blossom with a change of scenery. He should be good out of the Royal pen in 2008. I wonder who the Reds get in return. I'll hold out hope that it's Jeff Bianchi.

It's just as well for Salmon. Dusty wasn't using him and with Affeldt going to the pen there was no way he'd make the 25.
If he had options, I consider this a classy move by WK. Several times last Spring he released veterans when it was clear they wouldn't make it so they could try and catch on with someone else rather than serve out a minor league contract.
I know Salmon isn't in the same category but I think it shows some respect to players that is nice to see. We would have to have some serious injuries in the pen to need Salmon this year.

The fact that we are getting anything at all for Salmon is impressive to me. He has a decent fastball, but none of his offspeed stuff is consistent.

Here's the rumored return: The Cincinnati Enquirer believes the Reds will get Blake Johnson from the Royals to complete the Brad Salmon trade. Johnson, a 2004 second-round pick, was originally Dodgers property before going to Kansas City in the Odalis Perez-Elmer Dessens trade. As a potential fifth starter or middle reliever, he'd be a fair return for Salmon. Source: Cincinnati Enquirer minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=22489

I'm all for getting a guy that might have some promise for a guy who has shown he is nothing but a decent fastball. I'd probably put this guy in the pen though if we do get him.

Its Brad Salmon, whatever you get for him most likley isn't going to be anything of any value.
