When is it?
I have no idea how long he is supposed to be out. When he is, what should we do? His bat probably weakens the lineup, but he catches a better game than Bako. Or does he?
Thoughts?

No doubt Ross plays a gold glove caliber catcher. He also calls a good game, and even though he won't hit for average he will hit some homeruns. He's our best short-term option until a trade or free agent is signed. By the way there still isn't a time table for a return.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Ross.
He certainly has his pluses, but I think it's clear that he's not a starting catcher. Still, he's the best we have, but I'm not sure what we'll do with Ross, Bako, and Valentin.
I hope we don't carry 3 catchers again, but that's certainly a possibility. If not, maybe Valentin will be the odd man out. For better or worse (I'm not sure which), Dusty seems to favor Bako over Javy, so something has to give.

I favor Bako over javy as well. Javy can hit a fastball we all know that but he is the worst game caller and deffensive catcher I have ever watched. Now Ross can't hit for crap and his game calling is not great but he plays a solid Deffense. I for one think I like bako the best of them all as he can call a game. I think he calls a game better then any catcher we have had since Joe Oliver.

Bako has really suprised me with how well he has handled our pitchers, so I would still be starting him even when Ross comes back. I'd be fine with carrying 3 catchers if it meant that Juan Castro was DFA'ed. Need to work out some sort of trade to get Hatte or Freel out of here and bring up Janish to be the defensive stud off the bench for the middle infield. Either Janish or Hairston (who has been playing some SS in AAA).

i agree, javy has to be the odd man out here. ross and bako have both shown their handling skills which is vital to the success of our young rotation. this team has plenty of offensive firepower and can afford to have a weak/streaky hitting catcher.

Not to mention that Bako is outhitting Javy so far.

I think Votto goes down until we deal Hatty, Bako stays as the 1st C LHBC, Ross 2nd C play against LHP, and Havy moves to 1B to back up Hatty. Bako's playing great, Ross will have to work his way back in facing Lefties for the most part and I like Havy at 1B with the ability to catch when needed. This gives us more options durning the game to pinch hit, pinch run, or double switch at the end of games. I like having guy's like Javy and Freel, guys who can play more then one position when called upon to do so. Castro should be gone asap. This leaves a bench that looks like Freel, Javy, Ross, Hopp, and Gonzo. We still have some real decisions to make when we're completely healthy. Hatty and Castro must go, more so then Freel IMO. Votto comes back with Hatty gone and Hairston could get the nod if Freel is delt as well.

John Fay update on David Ross today:
From the Reds:
C David Ross' (low back spasms) rehabilitation assignment was transferred from FSL Sarasota to Class AAA Louisville. . .he is expected to join the Bats in time for tonight's home opener vs Pawtucket. . .in 4 rehab apps for the FSL Reds, Ross went 2-for-11 with 1 rbi.
It's going to be interesting when Ross is ready to come back. I don't think Paul Bako is going anywhere, given the way he's worked with Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez. Aaron Harang also gave him a lot of credit yesterday.
They could go with three catchers -- making Javy Valentin primarily a pinch-hitter. But they need to move someone else to open a spot to do that.
