www.mlb.com/news/reds-terry-francona-manager-hireReds to hire Terry Francona as manager (source)The Reds are hiring Terry Francona to be their next manager, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed the news. Francona, 65, who stepped down as Guardians manager after the 2023 season, returns to the dugout having managed three teams over a 23-year career. He has a 1,950-1,672 record with the Phillies (1997-2000), Red Sox (2004-2011) and Guardians (2013-2023). He led the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. Francona's hiring comes 11 days after the Reds parted ways with David Bell. Francona played for the Reds in 1987 as part of his 10-year playing career.

I can't imagine Francona comes on board unless they committed to a major increase in spending.

I don't know about a big increase in payroll, but he certainly must be a fan of the talent in the organization. Maybe Elly alone is enough to get Terry to buy-in.

EDLC Steer McClain Marte(I think we see a MUCH better version of him in 2025, seeing missing 81 gmes ain't easy to overcome) Lowder Greene Abbott Lodolo(if he can get and stay healthy) Friedl Fraley
There's much to like in the above, but their bullpen is their Achilles' heel. They have to (vastly) improved that if they expect to have any success, short or long term.

They have to (vastly) improved that if they expect to have any success, short or long term. While not where it needs to be, the bullpen wasn't atrocious. Mostly slightly below league average. 18th in ERA and WHIP 9th in strikeouts 12th in walks 25th in HR given up. That seems to be the big one. 22nd in hits given up. Better defense might help this too. We were largely dreadful in the corners this year. MLB Bullpen Stats 2024--- As for the roster, a rotation with Greene, Lowder, Lodolo, and Abbott with Burns and Petty on the way is probably pretty appealing. For the lineup we have EDLC, McLain if the injury didn't tank him, and hopefully at least one solid addition in free agency.

MLB Bullpen Stats 2024I think I like the bullpen as it is, especially if you can slide Spiers and/or Aguiar to long man and Maxwell should be a factor in 2025. I think they can do more harm than good attempting to buttress the bullpen via trade or free agency. One of Diaz, Cruz, or Santillan will probably have a great year next year. All were inconsistent but killer when they were on.

Terry on Elly: x.com/CBoxSports/status/1856702306752025078I remember reading a blurb in Terry's (auto?)biography. He was talking to Jacoby Ellsbury, who had seemingly lost his confidence and wasn't stealing any bases, and told him that you have the greenlight, so go ahead and steal, and if you get thrown out I'll tell the media that I sent you. Obviously, building the trust that he talks about in the above clip isn't just empty talk. I'm excited to have Tito at the helm. He could pay real dividends for the team and certain players on the team.
