Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell said that second baseman Matt McLain (rib cage) won't start his minor-league rehab assignment on Monday because of a stress reaction in his rib cage. How long McLain will be delayed remains unclear. It's beginning to look like McLain won't play at all for the Reds in 2024. The 25-year-old former first-rounder was put on the 60-day injured list to begin the season due to offseason left-shoulder surgery, and he just recently had a setback with a rib-cage injury right before beginning a rehab assignment. The UCLA product excelled in his first 89 big-league games in his rookie season in 2023, too, slashing .290/.357/.507 with an .864 OPS, 16 homers, 50 RBI and 14 stolen bases. McLain's season-long injury woes have allowed Jonathan India to stick as the starter at the keystone in Cincy.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

And thus is born the idea of the possible need to start worrying some time in the near future about McLain's injury risk.

Yep, sucks all around, but you can't count on him being healthy for 2025.

Yep, sucks all around, but you can't count on him being healthy for 2025. Yeah, not great when a 25 year old is having such frequent injury problems. Maybe it's just bad luck and he'll be healthy as a horse going forward, but there is starting to be reason for concern.

And thus is born the idea of the possible need to start worrying some time in the near future about McLain's injury risk. In terms of team management, only to the extent we would have otherwise offered him a big extension already. Part of our success depends on him. He'll either be healthy or he won't. If he's not, we will be screwed because we simply can't be using any resources on a 2B (or keeping India for that matter). Such is our lot as a cheap franchise.

www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/09/matt-mclain-likely-done-for-2024-season.htmlMatt McLain Likely Done For 2024 Season September 13th, 2024 at 9:34pm CST • By Leo Morgenstern It’s highly unlikely that Matt McLain will play again in 2024. The Reds infielder has been on the injured all season after undergoing shoulder surgery in March. He was initially targeting a return sometime in August, but a rib cage stress reaction he suffered about six weeks ago turned out to be a major setback in his rehab. Still, until recently, the Reds had been holding out hope he could return before the end of the year. Just last week, manager David Bell told members of the media (including Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer) that McLain was “pain-free” and on his way back to “baseball activities.” Today, however, Bell admitted that it isn’t realistic to expect McLain to return this season, telling reporters (including Mark Sheldon of MLB.com): “It’s probably not going to happen.”

McLain had a monster HR shot to CF in the AFL yesterday, says he is finally feeling 100%, so hopefully that lasts.
