$20-million option on Votto’s contract for 2024 with a $ 7-million buyout.
What say you Reds Country? Is it worth the additional 13M to have him play for us in 2024?

I personally think they should buy out Votto's contract for 7M then offer him a contract as a free agent for around 3M.
That'll save us 10M, Votto would make 10M and finish his career w/ the Reds.

Agree. I might even add some performance incentives to the deal since there is uncertainty around how well he will play at his age and coming back from injury. Critical to the deal is that you tell Votto he is no longer an everyday starter. You also say that you're watching him through spring training and April/May, and if he's finished, mid-season retirement will be discussed because this team has a chance to make the playoffs next year.

Genius. Good foresight

I know that public relations should generally not be a consideration when making roster moves, but this is a special case. Hard to imagine the Reds aren't thinking about the possible PR nightmare of Votto fully recovering from shoulder injury and having a big comeback season, while playing for another team.
It feels like before even considering letting him go they have to determine with a high degree of certainty that, with every chance to recover from injury, he is no longer a valuable, productive player. They have to watch him closely next Spring. Would absolutely love for him to have a major resurgence in performance, but if not, Reds fans will be amenable to letting him go because their first priority is seeing this young exciting team win. I think Votto himself would actually support hanging it up in that scenario because he has publicly stated that he does not want to be a drag on the team.

This is the kind of move a team expecting to finish last in their division would make. Votto can be a useful piece next year, in a reduced role. But if he isn’t interested in a part time role on next year’s team, they should move on. You can’t make roster decisions based off PR, unless you’re expecting 100 losses next year.

If Votto isn't resigned as a Red he may become a little like Frank Robinson w/ something to prove.
I think the Reds and Votto want to work out a deal, it just can't be for 20M.
What do you think is the most teams would offer Votto for a one year contract? Minimum wage is just under $1M right?

I think it depends how much they spend in free agency. If they can add a couple players that the fanbase can be exited about then they can absorb the fallback from some fans about losing Votto. If however they spend next to nothing and then let Votto walk the Votto Diehards will revolt.
what I would do is sign a couple bullpen arms, Trade for 2 decent starters and give Votto 8 million to stay one more year. Then make Votto your 1b about 40 games DH about 80 games and 40 off days as a pinch hitter. And that is subject to performance. If healthy and performing at above expectations then he could play more. If hurting and hitting.198 then play less.

Is Votto gone or will he get signed as a free agent by Reds?

Beloved by most Reds fans but Joey appears to be washed up and well beyond his prime. Too bad he only got a sniff of the playoffs in his years with. Best of luck on his getting into HOF. Stats are pretty borderline but he was well liked by the media and press. That should help his cause. So long to a class act. Best of luck in Toronto Joey.
