That was a butt whooping. A day before I turned 13. I loved Danny Jackson, Rijo, Sabo, O'Neill, Davis and of course the Nasty Boys. They might not have been fully assembled there yet as they had their apex in 90.

I think Larkin was resting that day, Kalvoski might have been injured or resting too. They were the most valuable offensive players for the Reds that year, worth 6.3 and 5.0 fWAR respectively. Sabo and Larkin were 5th and 6th in defensive value that year.
The pitching WAR numbers are so suspect as they really favor strikeouts and low walks. So when Orel Hershiser was 23-8 (like Danny Jackson), he was only worth 4 fWAR, hilariously. He was 23-8 and gave up 3 ER in his 3 starts with no decisions. He had a 2.26 ERA. Those replacement level pitchers must have been solid back then, lol. Him and Danny Jackson both had 15 complete games.
The consecutive scoreless streak of 59 innings (still a record) gave him the Cy Young over Jackson. Jackson was more fun to watch, especially busting right handed hitters inside and breaking bats. The stats bear out my memory, RHB hit .211/.269/.308/.577 over 888 plate appearances that year, not a small sample size!

I shouldn't have raised the dead with this thread. Schiraldi, DiPino, Capel, you are thus avenged. Please return to the netherworld and feel free to bring Swanson and Bellinger down with you.

I came on here specifically because of this thread and our talking about it yesterday. That is funny stuff. Good job sending them back to whence they came!

In any other season, DJ wins the CYA, but Hershiser was better that year. Sad that that was DJ's on good year for the Reds.
