Brian O’Grady continues to excel for the Bats, posting a .347/.412/.644 clip August while knocking out 7 dingers. The eight-round draft pick concludes a fine year at AAA at age 26. He’s played well enough to merit consideration being added to the 40-man roster, as he might easily be on other team’s rule V radar.
Gabby Guerrero earned a promotion with a .293/.325/448 August after a down July. At 24, he doesn’t profile much higher than a fourth outfielder, but he’d likely be ahead of O’Grady on the Reds depth chart.
Steve Selsky had a nice .318/367/.477 finish to the year which began pretty poorly for the former big leaguer. I can’t see him figuring into the Red’s plan, but the nice finish might land him a job elsewhere during the winter as a six-year minor league free agent.
Lucas Sims looked good for the Bats, making five starts, with a .192 OBA and 0.88 WHIP. His ERA was high at 3.81 and his only decisions were a couple of losses, but he’ll definitely be in the Reds rotation mess next year. The other righty from the Duvall deal, Matt Wisler also looked good, working largely in relief, with eight appearances, a 1.83 EA, .253 OBA, and 1.12 WHIP.
2B Shed Long (#8 prospect) bounced back after a pretty miserable middle of the year with a .304/.385/809 slash line; he’s bounced around the Blue Wahoo’s lineup but has hit best in the leadoff spot.
It was a good month and second half generally for a couple of White Sox cast offs: RHP Robinson Leyer has had a very nice second half in relief for the Blue Wahoos; in nine appearances he finished the season in Aug/Sept with 12 IP 9 H 3 ER 1 BB 6K. He’ll be a six-year minor league free agent this winter. Fellow righty Alex Powers notched 10.2 IP 11 H 3 ER 2 BB 5K over the same period as the Blue Wahoo’s primary closer. He’ll be rule V eligible, but it’s hard to see him cracking the 40 man. Also helping out was RHP Joel Bender with 13.1 IP 9 H 2 ER 3 BB 12 K; Bender, an Oak Hills graduate, was a 25th round pick in the 2010 draft but has seen his career largely derailed by injuries.
1B Ibandel Isabel, who came over from the Dodgers for Ariel Hernandez, had a superb end of the year for the Dry Tortugas, with a .296/.355/704 slash line in August, sending 12 balls into the bleachers. At 23, the Dominican also showed Adam Dunn like strike outs numbers with 152 on the year (plus 9 for the Quakes). He does draw a fair number of walks with 38. He’ll be rule V eligible, but I imagine he’ll get left unprotected. If he can continue to put up this sort of power next year in AA, I imagine he’ll start drawing some attention.
2016 fourth rounder Scott Moss (#18) had a nice finish to the year with a 3.24 ERA but poor peripherals (.273 OBA, 1.38 WHIP) in six starts. The fifth round selection that year, RHP Ryan Hendrix was outstanding in relief with nine scoreless innings in August (he gave up two runs in an inning in September) and managed to finish the year with an impressive ERA of 1.74 with a .205 OBA and 1.25 WHIP.
22-year old 3B Alejo Lopez had a solid finish for the Dragons with a .343/383/.818 slash line. CF Stuart Fairchild (#11 prospect) also finished well with a .283/330/.446 slash line. Top Cuban prospect SS Jose Garcia (#14) finally started hitting well with a .284/.314/.466 line; he’s still striking out too often, going out 29 with a K. Ninth rounder Packy Naughton finished strongly with 3.15 ERA, .228 OBA, and 1.11 WHIP in six August starts.
