Stated Jeremy Affeldt would indeed be in the bullpen and also once again addressed Joey Votto, saying he was worried about taking hittable pitches early in the count and that we cannot afford for him to get off to a slow start as he usually does. I was unaware Votto traditionally started slow, well slower than the average player. I didnt really agree with Dusty's opinions on Joey. Kind of made me worried that contrary to what most believe, Votto may not be the starting 1B for long which would be a mistake in my opinion unless he just tanks horribly which I don't see happening

He started real slow last year, but that was attributed to vision problems. After he had them corrected he got red hot.

I didn't hear that, so thanks for the Affeldt info. The reason I really like the Affeldt deal is that it was a one year deal for a guy with a power arm and groundball tendencies. But, best of all, if he has a solid season in 2008 then he could improve his Elias ranking enough to warrant compensatory picks after this year. So, the Reds could get solid production from him in 2008 AND compensatory pick(s) when he leaves. It was a great acquisition and slotting hiim in the bullpen may be the best way to get a good, solid season out of him.

Wonderful. Votto puts up a .289/.395/.476 line in the minors, showing more power as he moved up the ladder, and put up a .321/.360/.548 line in his cup of coffee. First thing we do, let's change his approach at the plate!
I'm going to hate the Dusty Baker era.

No doubt, Dusty's going to be hard on young players - especially position players.
However, I'm willing to give him some lattitude in this area because I think he'll get results where previous managers were inept (Boone, Miley, Narron). Those guys started plenty of rookies and seemed half-afraid to question their approach.
What's wrong with a guy that has 35 years in the bigs questioning the approach of a rookie hitter. Sure it would be better not to do it thru the media but Dusty's job is to get results. If Votto needs more time to get ready then let him get it in Louisville. We can't afford another pitifully slow start.
