Yay! So much for Winker being ineligible after being on the DL. The only ones I don't think very highly of who are being sent are Klimesh and Ryan Wright. If Winker, SMB, and Waldrop hit well in the AFL it might make for an interesting spring training.
I wonder what role Nick Howard will pitch out of in the AFL, before moving into a rotation next year. Only in his past 3 starts has he been allowed to pitch 3 or more innings.
Yorman Rodriguez wasn't selected, seemingly further acknowledgement of his likely September call-up.
I'm a little surprised that Phil Ervin wasn't chosen.

Delino DeShields (the Reds AA affiliate manager) will be the manager for the Surprise Saguaros (which hosts players from BOS, SD, SEA, TEX, and CIN).

Lorenzen started 6 games in the AFL last year - no reason to believe Howard would be used any differently.

I'm pleased to find that he wasn't. But... why wasn't he? He's still on the DL.

Lorenzen started 6 games in the AFL last year - no reason to believe Howard would be used any differently. Lorenzen pitched 21 innings over 22 games - so as a reliever - in the minors immediately after being drafted. Nick Howard recently moved into the rotation already, for 23.2 innings in 9 games and 3 starts so far. Howard is already being used a little differently. Not very, but a little. Any idea why Howard moved into the rotation faster?

The interesting part about Ryan Wright's selection is that they will need to decide after the season whether or not to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, after the 24 year old struggled in AA this season. It seems unlikely he'll be added to the 40 man roster unless he has a very impressive run in the AFL. If he hit badly - continuing his Pensacola production - he probably won't even be claimed or need to be protected anyway.
So Ryan Wright is one guy basically playing for his career... while Winker, SMB, and Waldrop probably hope to get some attention to justify a call-up next year. The later three have all previous put up .300+, .380+ OBP seasons (or half seasons) somewhere in the minors, and could make a big impression by doing the same against some of the top prospects in baseball. Winker and SMB have a final chance for redemption after struggling in AA.
Something I didn't realize at the time was that Raciel Iglesias isn't on the list, after Jocketty said that sending him to the AFL was the team's goal. Hrm.

I'm not sure what the intent of that rule is, but it seems like an odd one. One of the main uses of the AFL these days seems to be to get more development time for prospects who miss time due to injury. Make up for lost time by getting them a few more reps. Maybe there's a waiver to the rule for which teams can apply. Whatever the process, it's obviously not too difficult to get an exemption from the rule, as both Winker and Buxton are headed to the AFL.

I'm pretty satisfied with the list. Last year's group was pretty uninspiring other than Lorenzen. Question, has anyone ever been to any games of the past AFL seasons? I have an aunt that lives in the Phoenix area. Timing a visit to coincide with Spring Training has been an idea of mine the past couple years and it never seems to work out. Taking in a few AFL seems like an interesting idea too.

Supposed to be very inexpensive and sparse crowds, so you should be able to see the next wave of MLB players up close and personal.

Jonathan Mayo @jonathanmayob3 · 18h 18 hours ago This just in, @jtwinker23 can flat-out rake. Oppo double and HR in Surprise today. Not sure there's a better pure hitter in the Minors.
--------
Winker and Waldrop both had great starts. In Winker's first game (Wednesday) he went 2/3 with 2 walks and a homerun. Waldrop went 3/5 on Wednesday (and 4/9 through 2 games), and played 1b (rather than his normal OF job).
Seth Mejias-Brean also made his debut on Wednesday, going 1/5. Ryan Dennick allowed 1 hit and 1 strikeout in an inning of relief. Nick Howard will presumably start a game in the next couple of days.
Keep in mind that Kyle Waldrop will be added to the 40 man roster this winter, and if he does well he's the likely in-house option for a backup 1b if Votto is out again at some point. He's also a likely candidate to get a chance if a corner outfielder gets hurt.

Winker adds a 1-4 with another rbi. Carlos Gonzalez, Ben Klimesh and Ryan Dennick each pitch a scoreless and hitless inning a piece in the win. Nice start for most of the Reds representatives in the AFL.

Nick Howard is scheduled to start tonight's game for the Surprise Saguaros, for his AFL debut.
Winker is now 3/7 with 1 HR, 3 BB, and 1 strikeout so far, not yet showing any problems after missing half the season.
