In the strike marred 1981 season the Reds had the best record in baseball, yet they failed to secure a spot in the playoffs due to finishing a close second in each split season. In the first split season the Reds finished 35-21 and finished 1/2 a game out of first, and out of the playoffs. There were no makeup games during this shortened season. During the first half split season the Reds had 2 rainouts. On 4-19-81 the Reds led the Giants 4-0 before the rains came. On 5-26-81 the Reds led 2-0 vs Cardinals before the rains came. Either one of these game completed along with a Reds win and Reds would have made the playoffs. Talking about alternative baseball history! Lets not forget that in the AL the Kansas City Royals made the playoffs with a 50-53 overall record. The only team in MLB history to make the playoffs with a losing record. Life just ain't fair.
