I feel like the guy doesn't get mentioned much and there are a lot of people who would not mind trading him but i for one hope we hold on to him. His hustle alone will still make him a fan favorite this season and i think he can play an ok centerfield and a good second base to give phillips a day off every once in awhile. not to mention hes hitting .343 with a stolen base and no errors in 4 different positions. Not bad for a guy with a lot of pressure on his shoulders to even make the team. I hope the reds hang on to him and should Jay Bruce be sent back to AAA I wouldn't mind in the least if hes our starting CF and leadoff man

Freel has a little bit of speed, but he takes bad angles to balls, has a terrible OF arm, and isn't the best at judging a fly ball. His OBP tendencies took a serious nose dive last year, and he is erratic at best on the basepaths. With Dunn and Jr in the corners the Reds need a plus defensive CF'er, and that is either Hopper or Patterson.

Freel is a very poor defensive CF that is made to look like a GGer because of all the ESPN coverage of his circus catches. For every good play he makes, he makes around four or five bad ones. He's a fine bench player but he's not a starter.

i do agree that if freel took b etter angles to the ball and got a better jump to the ball when it was hit it would eliminate a lot of the diving catches he has to make but he does get the job done. he was slumping terribly last season and playing through minor injuries if i remember correctly before running into hopper. He is better than what he showed last season while battling with Hamilton and Hopper for playing time.

Freel is a hard nosed player and I respect his heart but feel that he needs traded. A team like the padres I think need a CF right now with Jim Edmonds hurt.
If we could trade Freel for a A ball pitcher with a huge arm you do it. Just a B level prospect that we might get lucky on. Patterson is starting everyday against RHP and Hopper will go against lefty's Once Gonzo is back Keppinger becomes utility infielder and I like green at that position right now.

He's a fine bench player but he's not a starter. I think he's better than a fine bench player, he's a great bench player. He does enough on offense (hits for average, gets on base, and steals bases) to be an asset (or, at least not a liability) and his defensive flexibility really extends the bench.
