All spring training I have been damn near screaming that there's no way you start Hatte instead of Votto.....
But they are changing my mind. Votto has had a dismal spring and is a relatively slow starter. Hatte has played very well this spring.
Maybe you let Hatte have his time in the first month or so and then bring up Votto when he starts hitting @ AAA? I think that's what I'd do at this point...

To expand on your thought of sending Votto down thay could. Send him down the first month or so untill he gets going. I know he alwas starts slow and the Reds can not aford to do so. Then play Hatte to A. Showcase him and increase his trade value or B. get him at bats that could help him when he is on the bench
If votto does not hit he will end up on the bench and that will not help him, in AAA he can get his at bats to get going than help the club.

Exactly. I'd love to see Votto from the start, but we can not afford a slow start by anybody if we're going to compete this year. He just hasn't earned himself a spot this spring.

I can understand the logic of showcasing hatte for a month or so, so that when a 1B goes down he can show himself as a top trade option. Votto needs to be everyday by the all-star break though.

We'll never get a huge return on Hatte, but we can get back more than we did for Conine, and we got a real good deal on Conine IMO.

I want Votto to start. If we are going based off the history of being a slow starter than Edwin Encarnocion shouldnt play either because he always starts slow.
This next comment has gotten me in trouble before and maybe it isnt true because I dont have the stats to back it up but every season I can remember Barry Larkin was a slow starter. Especially in April. Now maybe it is just a serious of games I had gotten to watch over diffrent april's that has me thinking this.
If anyone can find a website that has like career averages for players in certain months I would love to see it. I looked but havent been able to find anything.

Looks like you're right. His worst month BA-wise was April.
Fewer RBIs in April as well.

I don't think there's any justification for going with Hatteberg over Votto. The Reds are putting too much stock in spring training stats if they don't start Votto. He's ready and there's not reason to hold him back. We know what we get with Hatteberg, but it's time for a changing of the guard.
Votto is the future and the future is now.

My thing about this is, we know exactly what we get with Hatty and I like what we get from him. We know he is going to swing a huge bat and come up big because thats what he does. I say take advantage of that while he is hitting and Votto isn't any where near Hatty right now. Let him start and see what it shapes up like in a couple weeks.
