Edwin Jackson has been rumored to possibly be on his way out of TB. Freel, along with OF's for a lot of other teams are being mentioned in the swap. Given Jackson's talent and his age, I would definitely roll the dice on this year.
Does anyone think Freel for Jackson would be enough to get it done?

Jackson is in the Rays rotation and they are still quite high on him. I really don't think that's enough to get it done, but I'm not convinced I'd want to pay any more to acquire Edwin either.
Personally, I think Jackson is overrated. His control is poor and seems like a thrower more than a pitcher. He's got a live arm, but that seems to be about it.
If all it took was Freel, then I might consider it. At this point, Jackson *might* be an upgrade over our 5th starter, but even that isn't guaranteed.

I'm in complete agreement with everything Lark said about Jackson.
However, if the Rays pay his entire salary, I'd take a bucket of shiny new baseballs for Freel. I wanted to trade him last offseason, when some teams still viewed him as a potential starter.

You could move Jackson to long relief if you have no faith in Belisle in the pen.

Agreed, anything to keep Hopper on the roster lol Not to mention you get rid of a player that we have very little use for, is making too much money for his role, and on top of that you bring in a guy with some crazy upside.... I don't see any down-side to this. Even if Jackson stinks it up, at least we got rid of Freel...

Wow, I guess I'm in a minority of one these days. I still like Freel and what he can provide us off the bench. Given the escalating salaries around the league, his salary really isn't excessive. I think the flexibility he provides and the options he creates are of significant value to the Reds.
Of course, one would hope the Reds would do more to take advantage of the flexibility than to just carry a 3rd catcher. Still, I think Freel will have a solid season in 2008.
This isn't a bad bench:

I think Dusty values infield defense enough to keep Castro and start Hopper in Louisville. The rest I thnk Lark has right unless someone is traded.
I also wouldn't be surprised to see us start out with only 11 pitchers (because of the off-days) and start with 3 catchers to keep Bako. This would give Krivsky more time to search for a trade partner but Bray and Mercker would have to go to AAA for a couple weeks. Just my 2 cents.

Hopper's defense and age will keep him on the 25 man all year. He is the 4th OFer and will play whenever Dunn or Jr is out as of right now. Or at least until Agon gets back at which point Kepp becomes the primary backup for every position except CF and C.
I'd keep Kepp starting at SS even after AGon gets back, but thats just me.

I don't think it is time to trade Freel. Looking at the roster emotion aside, we have question marks. -Is EE finaly going to play all year like the last hafe of last year? -When will Gonzales be ready to play? Untill he is you have castro. Do you want his bat in the line up with any regularty giving people days off or if there is an injury. -Will paterson's obp be above his coreer .298? By the way, When do we stop talking about a 8yr vet as a prospect?
-To a lesser worry, Hopper only has a hafe year in the majer leagles. Will he beable to repeat last years production. (I think he will but will he?)
(emotion back momentarly) yes, Freel is my favorite and I think he still needs to lead off. Just not every day. (ask we why. I will give you info in form of stats and observations. when My classes and job grant time. Agreeing is up to you.)
If freel is gone it weakens us. If nothing else, off the bench.

Food for thought:
The St. Petersburg Times reports that the Rays are interested in acquiring an outfielder and could be willing to trade Edwin Jackson or Jason Hammel in order to get one. Both Jackson and Hammel are out of options, but are expected to make the Rays' rotation. Unless a trade is made, Eric Hinske will serve as Tampa Bay's fifth outfielder. Source: St Petersburg Times
