The Reds are very very deep in minor league pitching if you ask me
Bailey Thompson Maloney Wood Ravien Lotzkar
I would draft a hitter in rd 1 as we are not nearly as deep in top line hitters and that is even more the case with Bruce no longer in AAA
I would still go after a pitcher in rd 2 but in rd 1 get the bat !

I like the following bats that could be there at 7...if they are not guys who I think will fall I wont mention so here is my list
Eric Hosmer, 1B, American Heritage HS, Plantation, Fla. Yonder Alonso 1stbase U Miami Gordon Beckham, SS, University of Georgia Justin Smoak, 1B, University of South Carolina
Hosmer IMO is the best bat and should go before pick #7 but he could fall as he will ask for alot of money but IMO since the Reds have no 2nd rd pick why not overpay for rd 1 pick!

Hosmer would be nice because he could move to left field from what I have read. Smoak and Alonso are stuck at first base. Unfortunately, Hosmer is another lefty. I really like the prospect of Smoak because he is a switch-hitter. I think Votto could handle left at least as well as Dunn, and Smoak should also be a fast riser. What the Reds really need is a college center fielder who can stay in center and can hit... like Drew Stubbs was supposed to be.

Thank you Star. Duke and I have been disagreeing about pitching in this draft. I say we HAVE to get a hitter because the only top tier pitching is at the college level. Now, to me, a college pitcher picked with the 7th overall pick should be by AAA pretty soon and in my opinion should be in the MLB rotation by the beginning of 2010. Harang, Volquez, Cueto, Bailey, Maloney, Thompson, and even Arroyo should all be around by 2010. Therefore any top pitcher would be blocked. The hitters are better then the pitchers anyway in my opinion. Hosmer is the best, but Alvarez is only a slight notch below. I love Smoak but he will be blocked as well by Dunn and Votto if you believe Dunn will be resigned which I happen to think he will. Hicks is my favorite (assuming Hosmer and Alverez are gone) and has been since the beginning. However, I've learned he isn't as fast as I have previously heard only being a 60. That's disapointing, but his arm/power/speed combo is still to big to ignore and would give us a option other then Stubbs for a future leadoff hitter within the minors.

I want the Reds to take a solid SS or 3B. I think thats the position of the most need. Especially SS.

I have to wonder if Pedro Alvarez fell because of signability if the Reds would take a chance on what could be the elite hitter of the draft at a needed 3B position, that could be MLB ready by the start of 2010?
After Alvarez the next 3B and SS options are Casey Kelly or Brett Lawrie, who I don't see as worthy top 10 picks.
I'm fine with a hitter or a pitcher, as long as they get the best talent available. Or at least someone they can legitimately argue as the best talent available.

I'd love to get a crack at Alvarez, but from what I've read the Pirates have locked in on him and plan to pick him to send a message to the fan base that they are serious about competing and willing to spend the money to do so.
