Some random draft notes to get us through the weekend:
• Aaron Hicks and Anthony Gose are both only willing to sign as hitters; Hicks has already turned down first-round offers from teams interested in signing him as a pitcher. Meanwhile, Hicks had a stellar workout at St. Louis' stadium on Saturday.
• Robbie Ross is asking for a signing bonus of $1.575 million, or mid-first round money, to buy him away from Kentucky. He's not projected as a first rounder, making it likely he'll go to school.
• Brian Matusz may be in the lead for Baltimore's pick at No. 4.
• San Francisco is rumored to be shifting focus to Gordon Beckham at No. 5, unless either Tim Beckham or Buster Posey falls to them.
• Brett Lawrie is heavily in Cincinnati's mix at No. 7, while Jason Castro has popped up at No. 8 to the White Sox or perhaps at No. 9 to Washington. If the Reds don't take a college pitcher, then both Houston (Aaron Crow?) and Texas (Shooter Hunt, Christian Friedrich) will likely go in that direction, unless a top player falls to Texas due to signability concerns.
• The Dodgers have renewed interest in Zach Collier, and they believe Hicks will be gone before their pick.
• There's a rumor running around that catcher Adrian Nieto from Plantation, Fla., blew out his elbow, but it turned out to be a false alarm. Nieto still has a chance go to in the sandwich round to the Mets, or to Washington in the second round, although both teams are rumored to be on Castro (also a catcher) in the first round.
• Some names expected to go in the sandwich round include Lonnie Chisenhall and Tyler Sample (Mets have strong interest in Sample), while University of San Francisco lefty Evan Fredrickson, who has touched 96 but has below-average control, is in the second-round mix for a few clubs, including Milwaukee and possibly Baltimore.
