It'll be interesting to see where Juan Duran slots in on the Reds top prospect list.
Given his age, body type, skillset, and projection, I'd say he easily slots in the top 10 next year. Of course, at that point, Homer, Jay, Cueto, and Votto all will have graduated, so it won't quite be the same stellar group of 10 prospects.
Still, it's hard not to consider Duran a steal by the Reds.

So...how long until he can come over and play in the American minor leagues?

BA listed his power potential as an 80 on the 20-80 scale He'll defefinitely play in a Venezuelan or Diminican league this year, but in theroy he could play for the Billings Mustangs this year if they wanted him too. I agree he'll play down south this year, then next year for teh GCL Reds, and I expect he'll probably get some time in Billings in 2009 as well, and start in Low A Datyon in 2010 when he is 18 years old. 2012 is the earliest we could hope to see him in a Reds uniform, and 2013 is more realistic, but even then he'll only be 21 years old

I always wonder, at what point do the United States child labor laws kick in in the baseball industry? Can a 16 year old "work" as a full-time "employee" and not be in school?
These prospects are getting so young that I would think that would have to be taken into account at some point.

I don't think US child labor laws apply in the DR, but even if they did, it would be real easy to get him emancipated to where he could hold a full time job. A $2 mil signing bonus is probably a pretty good convincer that he will be able to earn a decent living.

I am very excited about this kid and think of him as a possible Vlad like player and will make it to the majors about the age Miggy did.

One thing that does worry me is that is he is 6'6" at 16 years old, I hope he doesn't get too much taller.
Hopefully he fills out and ends up around 6'6" and weighs around 225-235. At 6'6' he would still be pretty thin at 235.

At 6'6' he would still be pretty thin at 235. That kind of height makes me think he's going to be a whiff machine. It's rare to find a tall player who doesn't strike out a ton. They have bigger strikezones and longer arms which lead to longer swings. Of course, strikeouts aren't as important as what he does with his hits, so we shall see. Still, I'd be very surprised if he makes consistent contact at the higher levels.

6'6" isn't too bad for a hitter, and Ks may be an allowable sacrifice for the kind of power he is going to bring.

Anybody here think that Duran might be able to give us what we were looking for from Griffey after the trade?
He sounds like a similar player, except maybe with a raw swing (which might be why there are Vlad comparisons...I could deal with having a Vlad-like player though..lol)

I'm expecting him to be a force on offense and (hopefully) a non-liability on defense. I'd be quite content with that, though that would fall below what we wanted from Jr.

In the BA article that came out with his signing, they talked about him being a naturally gifted runner, but that his future with it depended on his size. They said it was conceivable he could play CF, but would be better suited for a corner OF spot where he would give plus defense from that position.

Do we know much about his workout ethic and strive to actually become big?
