insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3372254&name=law_keithFirst baseman Eric Hosmer would probably go in the top five to eight picks overall if it wasn't for his reported demand for a signing bonus of $7 million. Neither Hosmer nor his advisor, Scott Boras, responded to requests for comment. Hosmer has incredible bat speed, plus-plus raw power and good athleticism for a corner player; he's above-average defensively at first with an above-average arm, and might be able to slide to right field for a team already locked in at first base. Hosmer gets his hands into great position to offer both contact and power, gets his arms extended on anything that's not in on his hands and accelerates his wrists from his loaded position get the bat to the ball extremely quickly. If Hosmer has a flaw as a hitter, it's on hard stuff inside, where he can get a little tied up. But in Tuesday's game, almost everything he saw was away, including the breaking ball he hit out to dead center field to win the game -- a ball I never saw land.

More Hosmer news and a teamate of his: insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3411917&name=law_keithThe Mets are very interested in American Heritage (Fla.) catcher Adrian Nieto, a switch-hitter who has a strong arm and projects to hit for power. Nieto could go in the sandwich round, where he has several suitors, and shouldn't last beyond the second round. Meanwhile, rumors that the Marlins covet his teammate, first baseman Eric Hosmer, won't die; the roadblock is that the Marlins' ownership hasn't signed off on going well over slot to sign Hosmer, who was 90-94 off the mound at the Sebring showcase and was clocked at 96 last week, although his future is at the plate.

Hosmer however, could be affordable to the Reds. Due to our lack of picks (not picking until 80th after the 7th pick) allows us to spend more then slot value on a guy with the 7th pick. I don't want a pitcher because they are to risky for the money, but if Alvarez or Hosmer are there I say we take them. They are the best hitters in the draft who could slip because each are expected to ask for over $7 million.

Wow....and some people complain about the service time paycheck that some guys like Prince Fielder get....
7 mill to draft a guy is out of hand.

Hosmer IMO has the best upside of any hitter in the draft. Oldschool makes a good point about the fact we dont draft untill the 80th overall pick after that. I say we draft him and try and get him down to 5 million.

"Call the fire department, this one's outta control!"
Seriously, it's just beyond reality.
I bet we don't draft him.

I agree, 7 million is just plain stupid. If guys in the Reds clubhouse were bent out of shape by the special treatment of one J Hamilton then what do you think giving a guy 7 M to someone who is completely unproven will do to the clubhouse?
I pass on this one.

I pass on this one. It would be 2-3 years before he ever made it to the bigs so in that time they probably won't give a crap. They were willing to spend the money on Duran, and like Star said, just because he is asking for $7 mil, doesn't mean it has to be that much. He is probably asking for $7 mil so he can get $5-6 mil.

These players are the poor man's free agents. It's not seven million per year (is it?). If Castellini is serious. it gives him a legitimate chance to show it. Of course, there's not much doubt in my mind that someone picking ahead of the Reds will feel the same way and he won't be there when the Reds pick.

It would not be per year. It would just be a signing bonus to get them to agree to sign a contract. If they do work out... and that's the big IF... then between the years in the minors and the 6 years we have them under control in the bigs, it would really boil down to less then $1 million a year. Again that's assuming he gets the full $7 million asking price. More then likely he won't.

The Reds aren't going to get an ASG anyway so there is no real advantage for them to stick to slot other than to just cheap out over taking top talent. That said,i'd still take Crow, Tim Beckham, Matusz, or Pedro Alvarez over Hosmer.

I don't want to pick a pitcher. A college pitcher especially. A college pitcher would progress to quickly and then find that the rotation is pretty much locked up at the moment. Maloney, Thompson, and Bailey are already being blocked (though one of them will eventually take over for Belisle). I don't want our draft pick to help our AAA team. I would pick Alvarez over Hosmer, but I read an article that says Alvarez said to a friend he was going to ask for $8 million. He denied it so who knows if it's true. Beckham I would take over Hosmer only if there was a huge difference in how much they wanted. Alvarez would progress through our system quickly and make EE expendable by giving us a 3B with great defense and a very projectable bat.

I'd pick a pitcher like Matusz or Crow and then have a mind to trade Arroyo for either catching help, or ackage him with Valaika going after a legit shortstop.
I really doubt the braves are willing to deal Yunel Escobar, but I would offer them this package:
Reds get: Yunel Escobar 1-2 A Ball prospects
Braves get: Bronson Arroyo Chris Valaika Ken Griffey Jr

Might as well change Valaika to Janish at that point.
But anyway I think with Beckham, Hosmer, Alvarez, Smoak, Hicks you have to go with a hitter.
