The more and more I think about it, the more I want the Reds to take a hitter at #7. The only can't miss pitcher I see in this draft is Matusz and possibly Friedrich (albeit Friedrich is in a weak conference). Matusz will certianly go top 4, and Friedrich plays in a weak conference so that is a little concerning.
With Hosmer, Hicks, Beckham, and maybe even Gordon Beckham the top hitters in this draft seem a lot safer of a pick, and all are potential franchsie changers.
It's not that I don't agree pitching is a top priority, its jsut that out of Scheppers, Cole, Hunt, Crow, and most of the other top pitchers I see significant risk. Then again, I guess that risk is always there.
In the end, as long as we get what I see as an elite talent, hitting or pitching, i'll be happy. I just hope they don;t go on a layer that is raw and just a tools player or a power arm with no secondary pitches or command.

Good point about taking a hitter being the safe pick and a possible game changer. Matusz would be a great pick but he's not going to be their at 7. Hosmer and his agent Scott Boras are asking for big money 7mil or so. That's not a rout I see the Reds taking but if we can make some cap room why not go with Hosmer or Alvarez. I like Hicks, a 5 tool player who hits from both sides of the plate. Tim Beckham, another 5 tool player who has good size and the ability to hit for AVG. and power. Gordon Beckham, another UGA product that can hit. This guy could be this spitting image of Kepp which is a good thing right.
My personal two fav's for this pick are Friedrich and Hicks. This Reds team could use a LHP in the rotation for the future. After Matusz Friedrich is the next best thing. Although Friedrich pitched in a lower division I league he has the stuff you want from a LH starting pitcher. Friedrich did hold his own in a competitive Cape Cod league which is something to take into consideration. I like Hicks because of his ability to hit both ways and he has all the tools. Hicks could be that lead off hitter we're looking for in the future or even a #2 hitter #3 hitter. Hicks is a plus defender with a plus arm and speed with raw power potential.

In my opinion after reading about a lot of the prospects and seeing the video of Hosmer, I want Hicks. In fact... I am going on record as saying that Hicks should by far and away be our choice, even over Tim Beckham. The tools he has are amazing. Here is my case for him:
Fast as lightning = Michael Bourn. His kind of speed is special. I mean so special that even if he can only get on base at an awful clip like Bourn he will still be valuable. His speed makes him as close to a lock as you can have to reach the Majors. Isn't that all you can ask for?
95 mph from the mound? Think of how Hamilton and now Ankiel hose people down from the OF. That kind of defense up the middle is a huge asset as all managers will tell you. Not to mention that super arm is connected to a guy with just crazy range.
Versatility like Ankiel only backwards. You draft him as an OF no question, but if after 2 years he is just a DISASTER then you can always switch him back to pitching.
