Not sure how I feel on this one. "Trading the closer" is a long used strategy, but I'm not sure what we would want/need in return. The returns are churning out a lot of young talent, would we want more prospects? More starting pitching? Or, is Diaz currently as valuable as anything we would get in return? www.mlb.com/news/top-trade-pieces-getting-hot-before-mlb-trade-deadline

This team seems to be just a few pieces away from actually contending in the NL.

Yeah, that's kinda where I'm at now, but I wouldn't mind more starting pitching. I'm not sold on Ashcraft, who was bad again today.

He seemed to have been pitching well until that comebacker hit him in the calf. But I agree this team could use another 1-2 solid SPs. I think this is the area that hopefully the front office tries to address through free agency this year.

I'm having painful flashbacks to the organization's previous forays into the free agent market for starting pitching. Even setting aside Diaz, we have some assets that we could trade away for starting pitching. But, maybe it would make sense to trade Diaz for pitching/pitching prospects, then go into the free agent market to acquire relief help and/or a replacement for Diaz.

I'm okay with trading Diaz if we get a quality starting prospect in return. Unless I'm missing something, the only real TOR potential talent we have left in the minors is Chase Petty, and he's still probably 2 years away from the Show. Like you, I'm not a believer in Ashcraft, I think Abbott is probably a #4/#5 guy, same with Brandon Williamson. But with Votto's contract finally off the books after this year, could the Reds actually go after a TOR starter in the free agent market?

I still love the idea of Ohtani on a 5 year deal even if it is $50 million. Get a pitcher and a legit DH who can play anywhere in the OF if needed. Votto's $25 million will be gone, most guys are on rookie deals for the next 5 years after this year, so when Ohtani is up for FA again, we will be letting him go and resigning guys like McLain, De La Cruz, Lodolo, Steer, etc. SP Ohtani SP Greene SP Lodolo SP Abbott SP Williamson SU Farmer CL Diaz C Stephenson 1B CES 2B McLain 3B India SS De La Cruz LF Steer CF Friedl RF Marte DH Ohtani Figure out a way to add a few decent relievers and I think we are right there, plus our payroll is still under $85 million, even with Ohtani. The amount of guys that can be the face of marketing on this team would be nuts: Ohtani, De La Cruz, Greene, India, McLain. That would be one hell of a lineup: CF Friedl 2B McLain DH Ohtani SS De La Cruz 1B CES 3B India LF Steer C Stephenson RF Marte

We haven't had a real closer since trading Raisel Iglesias. Don't want to go through that again. I think we should hold onto Diaz.

India is great trade bait. Maybe Spencer Steer also. Of course Newman. Gotta make room for our top prospects, or trade them instead.

we may have better players at the infield positions. Plus we have elite speed, but not India. young and inexpensive. you want to get something, you give up something. ...and I never proposed it. I just suggested how we could obtain pitching. but the answer man says we lose without India. Maybe 25 other guys would have an opinion on that.

All the players seem to look to him, especially the young guys for advice/help. I think trading India would be a massive mistake before some of these other kids can take the step and get a couple years in the bigs. Not sure why some folks are so down on India. He leads the team in runs scored, stolen bases, he is right there near the team lead in BA and RBI's. He is also pretty young. Why would you trade someone like that, the spark plug of your team that is the leader? I don't disagree you don't get something for nothing, but India seems like a net loss as a team whole than a pitcher would be a net gain, of course unless you are getting Ohtani.
