You know, I feel like we could be competitive this year, and it wouldn't take much in terms of payroll. Now I know this is a long shot and probably none of it will happen, but I think a few solid free agent signings and calling up De la Cruz to play short, and this team could actually be somewhat competitive this year, for reasonably cheap. Hear me out:
Sign Trevor Bauer to a 1 year deal Sign Michael Wacha to a 1 year deal Sign Jurickson Profar to play the OF Call up De la Cruz after Barrero fails Call up Fernando Cruz for bullpen help
Rotation:
Nick Lodolo Hunter Greene Trevor Bauer Michael Wacha Graham Ashcraft
Lineup:
2B - India 1B - Votto SS - De la Cruz C - Stephenson 3B - Steer OF - Myers OF - Fraley OF - Profar DH - Senzel
Bench - Newman, Lopez, Barrero, Solak, Casali
Bullpen:
Diaz (CL), Antone, Santillian, Sims, Cruz, Kuhnel
Not bad, eh? And well within "budget"
Other names that could help if Bauer and Profar cant be signed:
Zack Greinke Adam Duvall
What do you guys think?

I would be done with the Reds if we brought Bauer onto this team. That would be a total embarrassment.
There is zero reason to invest money into this team thinking it can become competitive. Save the money for when our youth arrive so we can fill the gaps with veterans.

Sounds possible but to me it feels like the Reds gameplan to be really competitive will take longer than that. Don't want to rush Elly and let players develop until Votto, Moose and Griffey are off the payroll. I think this will be a transition year with signs of life.

The idea that they are squirreling this away for a later day is laughable.

Just go back to the 2016 Astros. They were 30th in payroll that year. Were the owners being cheap? Or smart? Spending money on a 60 win team to make it a 70 win team is moronic. You spend the money on an 80 win team that can become a 90 win team. Which the Reds did do, just a few years ago which happened to be the covid year and it couldn't be worse timing for a small market club. They are spending heavy on the international market. Which is promising. It is also laughable that you are an immense coward that comes on and uses a guest account.

That is a very interesting question which is almost impossible to answer. Every position is up for grabs. Joey Votto will probably be the DH whenever he gets back. The starting rotation will be Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft, and Overton. The fifth starter is anyone's guess. The closer is Diaz. Stephenson may catch or play first. It is just confusing. I thought the Reds would be interested in Bauer, but it looks as though Bauer may be a bad guy for the clubhouse. He is very vain. I think Fairchild can have a breakout year. I think India may continue to worsen. Cruz and Cessa are in the mix for either a starter slot, or the pen. Antone is back so that should help in the pen. Sims is an unkonwn at this point. Alejo Lopez will probably make the team because he can hit from both sides of the plate. I do not know if he can get a starting gig though

Reds have 4th ranked farming system in mlb. I don't know if they'll be real competitive this season, but I'm very excited for 24 and 25.

If the Reds spend money they need to do so with a eye towards 2025 and beyond. They need to lock up at least one of the Lodolo/Greene pair like they did with Cueto and Bailey (yes Bailey didn't work out but that is the nature of these things even if you do things right you can still lose) It is important to keep the window open for as long as possible.
What I can't stand and what has all but driven me away from following the team is the 5 plus years of awful followed by a 1 year chance that they might be better then .500 and then back to awful.
I don't expect the big red machine ever happening again, but a run like the Reds had from 86-95 would be nice. With the playoff structure now the Reds would have made the playoffs something like 8 times in that run

Well the rush to the disabled list has already started. Antone has an additional sore arm problem. Out for at least 60 more days. Pretty much the new nowm for the Reds. Sign a contract, go on the disable list. Joey Votto won't be ready for spring training. guess he will be on the DL when camp opens. Who is next?

The simple answer is NO. No, we will not be competitive this year. I am so disappointed in Reds baseball.

Reds have gone all in w/ the farm system. They last spent big money in 2020 and it kind of worked out. Almost two post season appearances, but that's unsustainable for their small market.
There is light at the end of the tunnel, but I think it's important to enjoy being a Reds fan even if they aren't winning. There's still plenty to enjoy even if the bottom line is they're under .500.
Winning is not everything. It's how you enjoy the game.
Not only that, but we have such an illustrious history. It's a good idea to dive into that for a while when getting fed up with the present.
