Glad to see Casali coming back as a backup. We gotta pay Moose either way, so maybe it is best we cut him for someone else to fill his roster spot. Hopefully someone picks him up and helps pay his salary.

At last. I've been waiting for this. Just a horrible, terrible signing. Reds needed a SS or a CF if I recall correctly, but they signed a 3B and put him at 2B (Suarez was locked in at 3B).
I think Freddy Galvis ended up at SS, not what the Reds really needed.
Unless I'm mis-remembering, wasn't Senzel lined up to start at 2B that year? Did the Moose signing mark the beginning of the endless shuffling of Senzel around the field?

Did the Moose signing mark the beginning of the endless shuffling of Senzel around the field? Senzel played ~90 games in centerfield in 2019, Moose didn't arrive in Cincy until 2020. I don't remember whether there were any initial proposals about switching him back to 2nd. Oddly, I thought the signing made some sense, even though it gave our defense a bit of an "island of misfit toys" feel and Moose wasn't a great fit at 2nd. At the time, as I recall, fastball velocity was spiking and reliever usage was continuing to gain speed. The ability to handle velocity late in games and deep into the playoffs seemed increasingly important. Moustakas had recent success doing both. The biggest problem with the signing was Moustakas's health: he only played 44, 62, and 78 games, respectively, during his Reds' tenure. And, those injuries undoubtedly dragged down his performance level when he did play. I don't think it was a bad signing (even though it obviously didn't pan out), but I do fear that ownership will take the wrong message away from the signing, namely that spending money is bad and doesn't work. In fact, it's pretty obvious that they already have taken that particular moral from the Moose story, which is regrettable.

I understand the move if we were going to replace him but if we are paying 18 mil if he plays or not 1/4 of our current total payroll we might want to use him somehow even as a bat boy

Apparently they didn't think he was even worth the roster spot

Think Moose was like a cancer in the clubhouse. Giving him the boot gave notice that team was headed in the right direction. It was a necessary message to team and fans alike.
