Actually, I really do like a couple Dodger Prospects, #5 and #6.
Miguel Vargas 3B/2B/1B (Joey Votto's replacement) #5
and
Ryan Pepiot RHP (Not terribly far from the majors next year probably) #6
Both for Castillo and some fluff mixed in there for the Dodgers.

If you were the reds GM how would you approach trading Castillo and Mahle? Trade both or try to sign one long term? What type of prospects would you aim for? Etc

That would be an incredible undersell. If you can’t get at least 1 top 100 prospect for a year and a half of Castillo with a dozen or so teams bidding then you are in over your head. I understand most fans, myself included have overvalued our own players and prospects, but this time FOR ONCE we have all the power. You want Vargas and Pepiot that’s fine as long as the fluff your talking about is 2 of the other top 4. Prospects. Remember, Castillo is not a rental, and you have 10 or more other teams bidding, and Castillo is far and away the best pitcher that is not injured available. If that price is too steep then another team may be willing to beat the Dodgers price. What I fear is going to happen is the Reds Will trade Castillo to the Mets for a sack of marbles, because the Mets will take Moustakas and Minor. And we know Uncle Bob is broke so be careful what you wish for

Moustakas and Minor have to be two of the worst signings the Reds have made in the last 20 years. but even so, the priority has to be adding elite talent to the farm system, not cutting payroll.

Hey the front office got rid of everybody so why not Castillo. Maybe next year they can lose 110 games.

Castillo's start in NY today probably solidified him as their #1 target, assuming Severino is in line to miss any extended time.
Pham and Farmer could also be part of those discussions.

I.E. a hypothetical NYY trade where the Yankees send Gallo and a prospect just to vacate his 26 man spot and save 4M$. The Reds can eat that money easily by spending 4M$ less on next year's 100 loss club.

Hey the front office got rid of everybody so why not Castillo. Maybe next year they can lose 110 games. If you don’t understand why the Reds have to trade Castillo this year, then you don’t understand how small market baseball is played in today’s game. Houston did it to perfection and all of their players hit their prime at once. Reds have a very good young nueclus to build around. Who are all similar in age, with proper trades, a lotta luck, and savvy signings they could actually build a nice 3 year window. Doubtful they will do it but stranger things. But getting maximum return on Castillo and Mahle is a must. Otherwise they both play a year and a half and you get basically nothing except a sandwich pick of a couple guys that will be too young to help in the 3 year window.

If you were the reds GM how would you approach trading Castillo and Mahle? Trade both or try to sign one long term? What type of prospects would you aim for? Etc Yeah, that's the $24,000 question. At this point, I think you deal both. Really, what's the point of holding on to either? The team is terrible and the ownership/front office has shown no inclination to boost payroll. On the plus side, after 150 years as an organization, the Reds finally seem to have the ability to develop and coach-up their starting pitching. It's on the verge of becoming a core competency, which is another reason to dump Castillo and Mahle. As for who to target, they need to go with the "best player(s) available" strategy. My two favorite prospects, at least in the non-Elly de la Cruz division, are rhp Daniel Espino of the Guardians and lhp Kyle Harrison of the Giants....I don't think we could get either. If we are trading Castillo to the Yankees, could we get ss Anthony Volpe and live-armed rhp Luis Medina? If we are trading Castillo to the Dodgers, could get 2b Michael Busch, lhp Maddux Bruns, and one of c Diego Cartaya/rhp Bobby Miller? If we send Castillo or Mahle to the Mariners, could we get ss Noelvi Marte and ss Edwin Arroyo? And, while we're at it, let's bring Taylor Trammell home. Not sure how we would line up with the Braves, but I like what lhp Kyle Muller has been doing in 2022 and I'm intrigued by the athleticism and raw stuff of rhp Freddy Tarnok. It's tough to get teams to part with top flight prospects these days, but Castillo's value probably couldn't be higher and Mahle is better than he's shown. So, flip them both and load up on prospects. The one thing, however, that you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO is to once again use a valuable asset to dump a bad contract (a la the Winker trade). If they use Mahle or Castillo to dump Moose's contract, then it is, once again, totally inexcusable and indefensible.

I don’t trade Castillo unless the return is outrageous.
1) taking him off the market increases Mahle’s value, in a way. And I do want to trade him. 2) if Greene, or Lodolo, or Ashcraft are for real, we could win a WS next year. With the new expanded playoffs, if you sneak in, and you have a pitcher like Castillo… you could get lucky and win it. Castillo gives us a 0.5% chance. Trading him gives us a 0%. That may be small, but not being 0 is a big deal psychologically for the fans and team. 3) someone has to pitch the innings. Do we really want to overextend our now rookies and next year sophomores? 4) and most importantly… you get a draft pick if he doesn’t sign. That pick has a pretty decent chance at landing in the top 100 at some point. Less than 50/50, to be clear. But a decent chance.
If we’re just gonna throw in the towel for the 2023 season in July of ‘22, it better be worth it. 2 top 50 prospects at least.

Are you planning on sabotaging 29 team planes next year? Seriously though as remote as that is and I do mean remote, the reds could circumvent the loss of Castillo by making a deadline trade of their own next year. I know that’s crazy remote as well, thinking the reds would actually add payroll. Also, you want to sit on Castillo and lose him for next to nothing? The odds of a sandwich pick making the team is a long shot, making the team and producing is even longer. Smart teams don’t do that. Smart teams pillage stupid teams like the Yankees did us on the Chapman trade, then traded him, picked up Gleybar Torres and promptly resigned him. Hopefully the reds learned from that mistake and will do better this time. There is no reason other than incompetence that the reds can’t pick up a small fortune for Castillo, when you have a dozen teams bidding for him.
