It's still early, but looking back at some of the players the Reds were rumored to be in on during the offseason, what moves might have helped them the most thus far?
On the shortstop front, based on 2021 thus far, is Semien the only guy the Reds really missed out on? His OPS+ is currently 126, but neither Simmons, nor Gregorious, nor Adames, nor Kim, nor Villar, nor Rosario, nor even Francisco Lindor have an OPS+ of 100 or greater. Actually, Freddy Galvis has a higher OPS+ than any of these guys, including Semien.
Raisel Iglesias? ERA of 5.54 Archie Bradley? ERA of 6.00 Do we miss them?
Robert Stephenson? 2.51 ERA. Hmmm.....
Trevor Bauer is certainly a loss, but the cost was just too high. Perhaps the biggest "realistic" miss on pitching was not bringing back Desclafani (2.40 ERA).
There were some rumors of the Reds looking to move Sonny Gray. I'm glad they didn't.
The were also rumors, although fewer, that Castillo was available. Suarez as well. I don't recall people clamoring for trading these guys, but maybe it's looking like they should have been moved?
The outfield crunch also caused Winker's name to be floated. I'm super glad he is still with the Reds. Seems like a good thing that India wasn't a throw-in in a deal as well.
Thoughts? Any revised opinions of the Reds' offseason? Moves you really wanted at the time that you are glad weren't?

Castillo for a handful of magic beans would be a pretty good deal.

Teams that are trying to contend don't carry ALL of the following:
Cionel Perez Carson Fulmer Sal Romano Jeff Hoffman Jose De Leon (he's in the minors, I'm aware - he also has an 8.35 ERA in 18 big league innings)
These guys are total dreck. Most of them were highly regarded prospects at one point but flamed out with multiple organizations. Why are they all on the Reds? Because they're cheap. That's it. Nothing more to it. Reds acquired these dudes for nothing and hoped Johnson and/or Driveline could turn Fecal Matter into gold (Romano is homegrown - I'm aware. Point stands). Well, Johnson and Co. haven't. And there's no reason to think they're going to. I'm sure he's a good pitching coach - he's not a miracle worker.
Teams trying to contend carry one, two at the absolute most, of these sort of guys in their bullpen. The Reds have one in their rotation, three in the bullpen, and one on standby as the next man up. And I haven't even touched on guys like Ryan Hendrix, Heath Hembree, and Sean Doolittle - Hendrix probably belongs in the minors and Hembree/Doolittle are, at the absolute best, aging, mediocre arms that should be among the last guys you go to in your bullpen.
They don't have a big league starting caliber SS on the roster. They dumped a solid reliever in Iglesias for jack squat. They didn't extend arbitration to another decent reliever in Archie Bradley because, Reds. They replaced a Cy Young winner with Jeff Hoffman. Their big acquisition was signing a 34 year old reliever to a 1 yr/$1.5m deal, FFS.
Their offseason grade was a F, and not even close to a D. I've been following the Reds closely for 20 years and they have, by and large, stunk throughout those 20 years (a decent little run 2010-2013 aside). This past offseason was easily the worst. They stuck their middle finger to their fans.
I can't squint and see a path to them being good in the next couple of seasons. Maybe sometime beginning in 2024, when they're out of Votto's and Moustakas's contracts. They'll need Greene and Lodolo to be for real though, which is probably wishful thinking.
The reality is they blew the rebuild and need to start all over but can't because they're hamstrung with bad contracts.

This was such a funky offseason, I can't really remember what I wanted them to do....other than sign Brad Miller to play shortstop (hitting .305/.369/.475, by the by).
They may have gone into straight cost-cutting mode before I really had a chance to think through what they should do.
It's unfortunate that the pandemic hit, leading to cost-cutting, right after they constructed a roster of ill-fitting parts. Now, we have lineup of players who are interchangeable in that they fit everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
I don't think we realistically could have moved Castillo in an offseason where we were already losing Bauer and Disco. The only way dealing Suarez makes sense is in hindsight; the Reds consciously traded defense for offense during team building and Suarez is the type of bat (when he's right) that they need to make that strategy work.

The 2020 contracts made it very hard for the Reds to upgrade in 21. Votto's contract is another problem. There is no way Bell is going to let go of Farmer. He brought him to Cincinnati with him. I think ARod should be on the club right now, but he is not a favorite son for some reason. Santillan and Guttierez have both looked good so far for Louisville.

The guy has been somewhere between good and very good every year he's been in the bigs up until now. He is having an awful year, and I have no idea why, if it's a mechanical issue or if he's pitching through an undisclosed injury or what, but Castillo, on the whole, does not suck.

He is doing a good imitation of sucking this year and dragging the team down with him. The Reds were depending big time on him to make a run at a pennant but that is all behind them because of this bum.
