Nate Jones was informed that he's won a spot in the Reds pen. Jones was signed to a minor league deal in February. He's been limited to just 11, 33 and 13 appearances the last three years because of arm woes, but he's pretty much always been effective when healthy; he has a career ERA of 3.12 ERA in 291 1/3 innings.

Reds reassigned INF Derek Dietrich, LHP Jesse Biddle, RHP Alex Powers, RHP Ruben Alaniz and INF Alfredo Rodriguez to the alternate site. Dietrich is behind after a COVID-19 diagnosis, but there isn't a whole lot of room for him on the Reds roster anyway, and it was a shame he never found a better fit in free agency. He still might be added as a bench bat later on.

Interesting that Dietrich didn't ask for his release as is his right as a veteran

Interesting that Dietrich didn't ask for his release as is his right as a veteran I just don't think there's much demand for his services. A hot month or so last season with a juiced baseball doesn't change his limitations.

In fact I'd say that is apparent Yeah, I think it's pretty apparent to him, too. He wants to stay where he caught lightning in a bottle and where the organization saw him catch lightning in a bottle; the better the chance he can do it again and the better the chance that he'll be given the opportunity to potentially do it again.

I guess my bringing this up was quite timely. I'm sure this was a tough call. Perhaps another team contacted his agent asking about his situation. We'll have to continue to follow this. My guess is that he knows of another team that's going to bring him in so I expect him to show up to another camp very soon. Whether he sticks is a far bigger question. As a Reds fan, I don't care if he plays here ever again

I suppose he's a decent bench guy, but his combination of offense and defense isn't enough to land him a job as a starter. But, I wish him well on his next MLB stop.

Probably because he wasn't a complete boring ass guy. Baseball needs personality sometimes but the older baseball hardheads hate it and only want robots. I personally enjoyed him on the team.

Yeah, not sure how baseball survived for 130 years without choreographed team dance celebrations and bat flips to the moon.

If the Corona virus was going down like baseball interest in younger people we'd be well on our way to having a normal life.

It's amazing to me that a guy could be in a slump for 4+ mos but that's what happened in 2019. Given that, it's irrelevant whether he was boring or had personality

I get that we all care about the Reds winning more than fun personalities on the team, but Dietrich certainly had his fair share of high points last season - and yes, he was fun to watch.
The Opening Day go ahead home run was awesome. The three homer game was awesome. Him pimping out his HRs and watching the Pirates throw a hissy fit was awesome. Him getting beaned like five times in one 3 game series in Milwaukee was, maybe not awesome but was really interesting nonetheless.
The bee keeper stuff, bicep curl stuff, and fake mustache stuff was all goofy but who cares? Baseball is a game and the dude was having fun. I fail to see anything wrong with that. Maybe I'm getting more easy going as I get older, I don't know, but I enjoyed his antics last season.
It's unfortunate that he absolutely cratered in the 2nd half of the season. I know he had a shoulder issue - perhaps his struggles were related. He's not a full time starter at this stage of his career but I absolutely think he is an effective utility bat with power when he's right. Unfortunately, he was behind the 8 ball due to him testing positive for the virus, and JVM emerging as a young, cheap version of a similar type of player made him more expendable.
I hope he signs with a team that doesn't play the Reds and earns himself a bigger payday in the offseason. He's a very, very easy guy to root for.
