I really don't understand this rule. Questions about it.
Can a pitcher enter the game as a pinch runner or pinch hitter? Can a pitcher like Lorenzon be a late inning defensive replacement.
The rule states that in order to be a 2 way player a player must make at least 20 starts in a field position with three AB'sin each of those twenty starts. That sounds impossible for Lorenzon to achieve. How would a rookie two way player be able to qualify at all for the length of his career?
Can a pitcher be in a game, be switched to a position, then come back and pitch again? I think that was disallowed with the designated hitter, but I am not sure, nor am I sure it would apply to a posistion player.

Pitch, hide in left, then pitch again?

I really don't understand this rule. Questions about it. Can a pitcher enter the game as a pinch runner or pinch hitter? Can a pitcher like Lorenzen be a late inning defensive replacement. The rule states that in order to be a 2 way player a player must make at least 20 starts in a field position with three AB'sin each of those twenty starts. That sounds impossible for Lorenzen to achieve. How would a rookie two way player be able to qualify at all for the length of his career? I think that was disallowed with the designated hitter, but I am not sure, nor am I sure it would apply to a position player. Didn’t Maddon pull that move with Travis Wood a few years ago? Pitch, hide in left, then pitch again? Not sure it really matters. If the guy can pitch and play the field, who cares if he pitches to one batter, goes to OF for one batter, comes back in to pitch to batter 3. As long as he is not leaving the playing field and is actually playing a position, why does it matter? Could do the same thing with Votto if you wanted, but who would want to replace a pitcher with a fielder if they can't pitch? These pitcher two way players are more valuable for versatility, they should be allowed to do that. I say if every team wants to keep hiding a relief pitcher in the OF to avoid this new 3 batter rule, let them. Let these other bozos take the chance that nothing is going to be hit to these relief pitchers hiding in the outfield?

Now that it's a 26 man roster players have to be designated as a hitter, pitcher, or 2 way. Can't have more than 13 pitchers, could theoretically have less (but it's doubtful any team does that). The Reds don't have anyone on their 40 man roster that meets the requirements necessary to be designated as a 2 way player. In fact no team does now. Ohtani with the Angels will likely be the only player that meets that designation by year's end (he currently doesn't meet that requirement).

I don’t believe that can be the case. Although the rule does not state the 3 batters must be consecutive...the rule does say “..before any pitching change can be made”. Which closes that loophole. I imagine Lorenzen would have to pitch to 3 batters each time he takes the mound (or finish the inning)

It's basically about getting another pitcher on the team other than the 13 already allowed. So if one of your pitchers i.e. Lorenzen started 20 games as position player then he wouldn't count as a pitcher and thus become the 14th pitcher.
It doesn't prevent pitchers from still pinch hitting or running or defensively.
