That whole WaPost editorial is worthless due to its false premise. Gov't handouts are far left policy but they don't define socialism. Concepts like gov't takeover of private businesses and a goal to rid the country of all billionaires is socialism. With that definition in mind, let's see her write an article accusing Trump of being a socialist. until that happens, this is nothing but noise. Definition of Socialism: Where this concept of corn subsidies equating to socialism ever got started, I do not know Simple. It got started by Republicans muddying the definition of socialism and slapping the "socialism" label on anything and everything Democratic to scare and fire up the Republican base. At this point, there is no clear, accepted definition of socialism. I don't speak for all Republicans nor do they speak for me, but I've given you exact examples of socialism by my definition that involve current Dem candidates in these threads. Medicare, handouts to farmers and Obamacare subsidies are not socialism. If a Republican says differently then I disagree.

Under the Obama administration companies like Amazon and GE were paying zero federal income taxes. I railed about it at the time and nothing got done. I agree this is a problem. Neither party wants to address it. Ditto with the deficit. Both parties just agreed to a huge new spending bill. There is no angel party in this country. They're both letting us down.
As for millennials complaining about the economy, they are barking at the moon because they have no frame of reference. I started taking out student loans in 1982. The interest rate was fixed at 9%. 7 years later when I graduated from graduate school I had $35K to pay back. I'll tell you another thing. When I got a "loan" for $5K I received a check from the bank for about $4500 due to various fees taken out of it. So I was behind before interest even started accruing. I lived through those years and the 70s which were horrible.
Do try to understand why us Boomers don't buy your sob stories. We've been there. We didn't have it easy either. It's never been easy

What's significant about that school and what's significant about 1970? Yeah, things are pricey now in education. State schools, not so much. Here in Ohio state school tuition is less than many private high schools. Look, I get that student loans suck. I've been there. Just quit whining about debt that you incurred willingly and get on with life.

It's never been easy OK Boomer.... It's not about being "easy." You acquired 35k in debt in 7 years. I acquired 200k in 8 years. Of course, part of that is my own doing, going to a private school for a portion of it, but it's still a substantial difference between your total and mine even if I had done public the whole way. "Entry level" pay hasn't increased 5 fold in that time. In fact, Boomers started to expect people to have higher level degrees before even BECOMING entry level. Also, the housing market has damn near tripled in that time. So honestly, (and sorry for this bluntness) F the Boomers and calling this stuff "sob stories." Seriously. Very few are expecting it "easy." The expectation is "fair." You Boomers have allowed the CEO to average employee gap to leap to astronomical levels and defended it as "capitalism." You act as if a 50% or higher tax on the highest 1% would discourage people from achieving those positions (which is outright laughable.) I don't expect your Boomer ass to look past your nose though - so I don't expect this to change your mind in any way - but use your damn brain before talking about "sob stories" - that's some of the dumbest condescending horse manure I've ever heard.

For your sake I really do hope you mature and fast, otherwise you're going to have a life of struggle. That's the thing. You're reading it wrong. I'm not asking you to pay off my bills. I am not in favor of universal student debt relief. What I'm in favor of is solutions to limit the cost of tuition, reduce the overload of purposeless degree escalation, improving "entry level" salaries, and reducing the excessive interest rate on federal student loans. You Boomers took your ball and went home. You have made it harder for everybody that has come after you to enjoy the American Dream, and yet have the nerve to tell people to calm down when they call you on your BS - even after you literally use the words "sob stories." I am an older Millennial. I, too, have worked my ass off to repay my debt. I have sacrificed to do this. I have bought now two houses in rough shape and worked to rehab them to build equity faster. The difference between us is that I can see how this is disproportionate to reality and past burdens. So once again, save your condescension and just try to look past your nose and make life better for the next generation - which we should all be trying to do.

Tuition at state funded schools in Ohio are about $10K/yr. That's less than many private high schools. That's not excessive. Don't like the interest rate? When it reaches 9% we'll talk. Entry level salaries have always sucked.
If you have any specific suggestions, present them and we can discuss it. I am glad to hear that you don't support debt forgiveness pushed by some Dem politicians

Entry level salaries have always sucked. If you have any specific suggestions, present them and we can discuss it. I am glad to hear that you don't support debt forgiveness pushed by some Dem politicians Tuition at OSU is 9700 per year. Room and board is 12,000. Books are another 1200. And that's for in-state. It just isn't feasible to consider the average kid a commuter for four years of school but even if you do, cost has increased two fold while average salaries have only increased 12%. Also, assuming nothing has changed in the last 15+ years, the average scholarship offer to a kid with a great ACT/SAT score and a 3.8 HS GPA is around 1K per year (which takes away the "just study hard and you'll get scholarships!" angle.) You could work a part time summer job and pay for most of your expenses. That's not possible now. On top of that, the federal interest rate is 6.8% (WAY above cost of inflation) and mounts the entire time you are in school. Also, again, entry level salaries may have always "sucked," but they didn't always require a Masters or Doctorate degree to get that crappy salary. As for suggestions, as already stated, one is reduce or eradicate the interest rate. The federal government doesn't need to make money off the backs of students in interest while giving tax breaks to the rich. Stop the senseless (and benefit-less) degree escalation! Or reduce the number of humanities classes you need for a bachelors and start pushing more specifics in the last two years of college and call that a fast-tracked Masters (etc.) Incentivize increasing entry level salaries (and all non-C level salaries) by placing a drastically higher tax on money earned over some large-arbitrary number. Honestly, do you really think the CEO of UHC "earns" 316 times more than the median salary of an employee within UHC? If we tax the hell out of his money over x-million, he either says "wow, there really isn't as much incentive for me to earn over x-million dollars so let's pass it on to others in the company" or he says "screw it, I'ma get mine" and we close the deficit (a different argument.) That is not socialist in the fact that there is still incentive to work hard and climb the ladder. But in the last 40 years CEO pay has risen on average 940% while average employee salary has increased a whopping 12%. You can not look at that and not agree that something has broken in the last 40 years. Of course, we should push trade schools more as well, but not everybody was born to be a welder or plumber.

No question room and board is a screw job at school. I suggest you not live in the dorm after your freshman yr. Get an apt with some buddies. My daughter's school charges $200/wk for food and it's not good food. I get pissed everytime I write that check. If you have any suggestions for better room and board solutions I'd be happy to hear them. As you can see, tuition is less than half the problem.
As for CEO pay, that's up to the shareholders, not the you or the federal gov't. If a company gets money such as what GM did, then I'm with you and I support the gov't controlling CEO salaries.

Tuition being half the problem is irrelevant though - unless you are proposing people live in their cars and don't eat during college. Seems like an unfair burden to me but to each their own. Overlying point - we should be trying to make a better world for the next generation when we can. We can do more to fix this problem than throw up our hands and say, "eh, what can we do?" or more frequently "entitled millennials are asking for handouts again." - When you analyze facts and make some reason comparisons, it simply isn't true that they're asking for handouts.

College or not, you need a roof over your head and food to eat. So by definition, that's not part of the cost of going to school, with the caveat that dorms/school meal plans are a rip off. Many millenials are looking for someone else to pay for their student loan debts. I'm glad you're not one of them
