D. J. Peterson has moved from 1b to 3B and has been quietly tearing it up at AAA of late with a .301/.363/527 while cutting back on his strikeouts. Peterson was claimed on waivers last year and has moved to the other side of the diamond since the Reds have no current need of a 1B anytime in the near future. If his contract is not purchased, he will become a six-year minor league free agent.
C Chadwick Tromp has put together solid but unspectacular numbers since his promotion to Louisville. You’d have to figure he’d be next in line to be called up should the Reds need another catcher at this point. His slash line for Louisville s .272/.345/723 while throwing out 18 of 50 runners and being generally solid behind the dish. Tromp would be eligible for Rule V if not added to the 40-man.
RF Gabby Gabriel had a solid June but traded off his some of average for more power ending up with similar OPS numbers. A .252/.271/563 goes with his 7 round trippers in July – if he could take a few more walks and still show the same power, he could be onto something. Another potential six-year free agent.
RHP Robert Stephenson has put together a stunning July although with just four starts. With batters hitting only .122 against him and a 1.71 ERA and even a complete game to his credit.
After a brutal June, Jose Lopez has bounced back nicely with .108 WHIP, 3.00 ERA and .218 OBA in his six July starts. He’s definitely making a case for a taste of the Bigs.
Jimmy Herget was practically unhittable with a .150 OBA, 1.59 ERA, and 1.06 WHIP in 12 relief appearances.
CF Jose Siri has finally started to blossom for the Blue Wahoos. He put up a .269/.342/.567 slash line and sent six out of the park. His defensive range is down a little, but he has not committed an error for the Blue Wahoos.
After a tough return to the Reds farm system, righty Daniel Wright has been pitching very well of late. July was his best month yet a 2.41 ERA with 1.13 WHIOP and .256 OBA in five starts.
In the helium, 26th round pick Joel Bender finally came off the restricted list and has pitched very well in relief. The local southpaw has given up 3 ER in 15 innings, allowing 13 hits, walking 3 and striking out 14.
RHP Tony Santillan has taken the promotion to AA in stride with 4 wins in five starts and 1.84 ERA, 1.19 ERA, and .252 OBA. 32 whiffs in 29 1/3 innings as well.
RHP Robinson Leyer, who came over from the Pale Hose, has had an outstanding July in relief: 12.1 IP 8 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 13Ks.
RHP Vladimir Gutierrez has seemed to figure it out in AA after a dreadful start. He improved upon his decent June numbers with a very solid 2.21 ERA in six starts with a .241 OBA and 1.20 WHIP.
RF Michael Beltre, who is a far more effective bat in Daytona than in away games, had a gargantuan July for the Dry Tortugas with a .338/.449/.477 slash line. Beltre was promoted from A ball in June but had a hard time of it at first.
2016 fourth-rounder LHP Scott Moss has concluded a very solid July for the Dry Tortugas with 3.15 ERA, .220 OBA, and 1.17 WHIP in six July starts.
2B Alejo Lopez had a very solid July for the Dragons. He was activated in June and has now settled in with a July slash line of .319/.379/.407 while playing plus defense.
RHP Wendolyn Bautista couldn’t cut the Dragons rotation but has been solid in the bullpen with 2.03 ERA in 31 IP (including 3 starts) – but with poor peripherals.
On the other end of the spectrum, RHP Hunter Greene made four starts in July and despite giving up ERA of 3.60 his OBA was .160 and WHIP 0.80.
And in the rookie leagues:
CF Zeke White, who came over in the Casitllo-Straily swap, has unreal numbers between Billings & Greenville: .380/.473/.587.
3B Dylan Harris is hitting .353/.395/474 for Billings.
Last year’s 11th round selection, righty Jared Solomon has been the Mustangs best starter so far with a 2.27 ERA, .187 OBA, and 1.18 WHIP in 9 starts.
On the pure power front, 1B Rylan Thomas, a 26th round pick this year, has 9 dingers and 21 RBIs for the Greeneville Reds. That translates to a .281/.462/.652 slash line. Rylan has shown a good eye so far as well with 29 walks vs. 21 strikeouts in 29 games.
CBB Pick Josiah Gray has been rock solid in his first 7 starts for the Reds – with 2.90 ERA, .170 OBA and 0.87 WHIP. Expect to see him with Dragons early next year.
2B Danielito Remy has put up solid offensive numbers for AZL Reds with .347/.377/.446 slash line. He’s been showing good range, but has 6 errors so far.
And finally, in the cursed with a really bad last name department, RHP Cory Heitler, a 34th round pick, has been pretty solid in the Greeneville bullpen, with 11 hits 3 ER in 12 IP, 3 walks, and 10K.
Top prospects with a poor July:
Stuart Fairchild (A+)
Jose Garcia (A)
Jacob Heatherly (Rk)
Shed Long (AA)
Chris Okey (AA)
Lyon Richardson (Rk)
