He’s a minor league free agent in 4 months if not repurchased. And your point is....?

Yep, but he'll not be a free agent if he's added to the 40 man roster. If/when he keeps hitting he'll be added to the roster as a September call-up, if he isn't traded beforehand. If Scooter is traded that timetable will move up, perhaps by a couple of months.

My point is, if you want to see whether or not he can hack it in the bigs then the sooner he's facing mlb pitchers then the better. No point in purchasing the contract in 3-4 months, having him sit on the 40 man all winter, enter ST with no options again, and not make the club.

No point in purchasing the contract in 3-4 months, having him sit on the 40 man all winter, enter ST with no options again, and not make the club. What I want to see is whether he can stay healthy. Whether his shoulder is functional. If it is, then I have no problem with giving him a roster slot next year.

Aside from health, he has to prove he can contribute in the bigs. Stephenson is in the same boat.

So, I don't think they are similarly situated. I think Herrera would contribute enough at the MLB level to warrant a roster spot, if healthy. On Stephenson, I don't think he can contribute at the big league level due to performance level.

Both are out of options at the end of the season = similar.

Dilson will get his chance; the Reds purchased his contract from Louisville, optioning southpaw Cody Reed back to AAA.
